5Explorations – 3D VideoThe goal of the current 3D video exploration work is to generate interpolated views from available videos of multiview camera configurations. The target application is mostly seen for upcoming generations of various (auto-) stereoscopic displays, either requiring multiple views internally or providing means for baseline adjustment. In the new format, only a low number (1-3) of video sequences would be transmitted, but rendering of additional views would be enabled by associated depth information. The activity currently concentrates on preparing test sets and anchor coding for an upcoming Call for Proposals (CfP). By the Xi’an meeting, new more challenging test sequences (in terms of content activity and camera movement) had been provided which were investigated in the period before the Kyoto meeting to complement the existing more static set. Extensive subjective viewing was carried out in Kyoto. Out of the 6 test sequences, good quality of view interpolation was already achieved for two, one more gives results of fair (only some visible artifacts) quality, whereas the remaining three require still considerable improvement. This result is remarkable in so far that until now, only fully-automatic depth estimation was applied. It is expected that by semi-automatic or manual interaction good quality can be achieved for at least four sequences, such that definitely the new material can well be used for testing in the Call. Good progress was also made in the definition AVC/MVC (both for video and depth maps) coding of anchors for the old, more static test sequences. All results were investigated in subjective viewing, and only a small number of cases needs redefinition of rate points (e.g. when quality was too good/bad at low and high rate points). In the period between the 91st and 92nd meetings, the first anchor encoding will also be performed for the new test sequences mentioned above, to the extent that good depth maps are available or are becoming available between the meetings. After all, the timeline decided in Xi’an can be confirmed as follows:
It is planned to provide a report on the results of depth estimation, view interpolation and anchor coding as performed in the exploration experiments, which is expected to help prospective proponents better understand the current status of technology, and also to be a promotion for 3D video. A draft version (internal) was also issued in Kyoto. An AHG was appointed (N11119, as recorded in N11076) to further the work until the 92nd meeting. Documents reviewed in AHG (see AHG report m17086)
