Ewart Grogan (1874-1967) was dubbed "the boldest and baddest of a bold, bad gang" of pioneering settlers in Kenya. In 1900 he completed a three year south-to-north traverse of the African continent after serving in the Matabele War. He also served under Milner before settling in British East Africa. He undertook many initiatives to prove the country's economic viability, pursuing both business and political interests.

The Regiment was formed in 1916 as the Rhodesia Native Regiment; with its Shona and Ndebele troops first in action in the East African Campaign. The Regiment was disbanded in 1919 and re-formed in 1940 as the Rhodesian African Rifles and saw action in Burma. During the 1960s and 70s they served as counter-insurgency fighters.

As Johanna van Warmelo, Brandt kept three diaries during the South Africa War. They were a daily diary and two private diaries written in lemon juice: a "secret" diary and a "love" diary after she fell in love with Louis Brandt. She experienced the horrors of a concentration camp, where she worked as a nurse and watched helplessly as many Boer children died of measles and other disease. At times she worked undercover for the Boer Secret Service.
