During the year 2000 The Neonatal Unit at the Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) in Dar es Salaam started a register of all congenital anomalies admitted to the Unit. Admissions to the unit are almost exclusively from the Maternity unit of the MNH. The maternity unit’s labour ward has an average of 17,000 deliveries each year. The authors examined the register of all anomalies and selected the particulars of those neonates with neurological anomalies registered from 7 January 200 to 7 January 2001.
