TOPIC #4: Some people think we should keep all the money we earn and not pay taxes to the
state. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
SAMPLE There is a view that taxation should be eliminated to help people keep all of their earned money.
Even though I understand where the frustration related to taxes comes from, I fully disagree with
the given opinion because of a need for public goods and safety. Also, when applied successfully,
taxation, even at high rates, can make people happier.
The practice of forcing people to pay taxation is definitely one of the most controversial ones, and I
do realize why people may be angry at paying government a huge sum of money. However, the
extent to which taxes help societies usually depends on a country, and the idea of paying taxes is
a good one. The main reason why taxes are essential is helping the government of any country
guarantee certain public goods, such as roads, parks and public transportation. These are rarely
financed by private entities, which means public budget is a must. In addition to public goods,
safety is another huge concern. From what we know, policing, firefighting and the army are mostly
supported by the money generated from taxes, meaning not paying taxes can result in not having
a certain level of protection both internal and external.
As mentioned above, taxation can be a positive practice and examples from several countries can
prove it. Scandinavian states such as Sweden, Norway and Finland, all have huge income tax
rates, sometimes over 50%, but these are the countries that feature in the list of the happiest
every year. This can be explained by the fact that thanks to successful public investment,
numerous facilities in these countries are either free or more affordable in comparison with other
countries. Thus, if taxes can help a country consistently be a part of the ‘happiest’ list, I see no
reason to bash taxation.
In conclusion, I believe paying taxes can be helpful both to the government and individuals.
Countries worldwide should emulate the success of states mentioned earlier.
