Abstract: This study evaluates the reproducibility of individual differences in behaviorally evoked cardiovascular reactivity among 39 young adult males. Presented also are initial data describing idiosyncratic patterns of hemodynamic adjustment that may underlie pressor responses to laboratory stressors. Subjects were administered three experimental stressors (mental arithmetic, mirror tracing, and bicycle exercise) on two occasions, four weeks apart. Heart rate, blood pressure, and impedance-derived measurements of cardiac pre-ejection period, stroke index, cardiac index, and total peripheral resistance were obtained during baseline and task periods at each session. To index task-induced "reactivity," residualized (baseline- adjusted) change scores were calculated for all variables; percentage change from baseline was also calculated for impedance-derived hemodynamic measurements. Test-retest (inter-session) correlations were significant for nearly all baseline, task, and change-score measurements. The few exceptions included diastolic blood pressure changes during mirror tracing and bicycle exercise and changes in stroke index and peripheral resistance during mental arithmetic. Although virtually all baseline and task correlations exceeded .60, reactivity indices yielded consistently lower retest correlations (significant r's = .35-.78; median r = .49). In subsequent analyses, subsets of individuals were identified whose reactions to mental arithmetic at the first laboratory session reflected changes in either cardiac output (CI reactors, n = 9) or total peripheral resistance (TPR reactors, n = 6), or a combination of cardiac and vascular influences (Mixed reactors, n = 8). This typology of hemodynamic response: (a) was corroborated by corresponding group differences in heart rate, pre-ejection period, and stroke index; (b) was reproducible on retesting; and (c) showed some generalization to the mirror tracing task, though not to bicycle exercise

Abstract: Patients with unilateral (left-sided) spatial neglect following right-hemisphere stroke were tested for the effects of visual stimulation on performance of a line-bisection task. As predicted from research on brain mechanisms of spatial orientation and attention, dynamic visual stimuli presented on the left side substantially reduced neglect in the task. In contrast, left sided static stimuli reduced neglect significantly less and dynamic stimuli presented in the center had no effect on neglect. Neglect patients with hemianopia did not show significantly less benefit of left-sided dynamic stimuli compared to neglect patients without hemianopia, suggesting that the effect of these stimuli was unconscious and automatic. The potential advantages of lateralized dynamic stimuli in the rehabilitation of neglect are discussed

Abstract: Two sources of information about deaths caused by myocardial infarction and stroke were compared: official statistical data obtained from the Central Statistical office (CSO), and data from the registers of myocardial infarction and stroke conducted under the POL-MONICA Warsaw Project. The completeness of the MONICA registers with respect to the CSO data was 78 %, and the completeness of the CSO data with respect to the MONICA registers was 88 %. The main causes of the differences were: lack of information in the registers on deaths outside Warsaw; lack of unequivocal identification markers in patients' records from different sources; and other errors in data processing. The agreement of the diagnoses in death certificates (in the CSO material) with the diagnoses in the MONICA registers was 70.4 % for myocardial infarction, and 64.4 % for stroke. The main cause of the disagreement between the diagnoses was a different methodological approach to the collection of data in the two information sources

Abstract: The Stroke Register was established in 1984 in Heidelberg, as a part of the MONICA Project, covering the same population (approximately 601,000) as the Acute Myocardial Infarction Register. In the present analysis, the data for men and women (aged 25-64) for 1985 and 1986 are presented. During the two years, 303 men and 143 women were registered. The overall age- standardized attack rate was 127.2/100,000 for men and 52.8/100,000 for women, and the age-standardized incidence was 97.4/100,000 in men and 42.9/100,000 in women. The proportion of first stroke was 76.5 % in men and 81 % in women. The 28- days mortality was 12 % for men and 19 % for women. Hypertension, diabetes mellitus, smoking and heart disease (coronary heart disease, rhythm disturbances) were identified as risk factors for stroke. Among the registered victims of stroke, 61 % of the men and 67 % of women had a history of hypertension. In men, a high prevalence of smokers, 54 % was found (33.9 % in the total population in the same age range). In women, the prevalence of smokers is nearly the same as in the total population. Diabetes mellitus was present in 23 % of men and in 40 % of women, and hyperlipidaemia in 30 % of men and in 18 % of women

Abstract: To contribute information on coronary heart disease and its risk factors (information which is still scarce in developing countries), this report is presented on a population screening study done in urban Jakarta, using the MONICA Protocol. A randomly selected sample of 2073 people (25-64 years) from 3 districts (total population 523,000) of Jakarta were examined. The results were as follows: electrocardiogram (ECG) signs of old myocardial infarction were found in 2.7 %, and sequelae of stroke in 0.5 % of respondents: prevalence of hypertension was found in 14.9 % ; male smokers were 59.9 % (females only 5.9 %) ; mean serum total cholesterol concentrations were 5.2 mmol/L in men and 5.4 mmol/L in women, with 13.4 % of all respondents having hypercholesterolaemia (greater-than-or-equal-to 6.5 mmol/L) ; regular alchol drinkers were only 2.7 %. Anti- smoking, anti-hypertension and active physical exercise campaigns already launched many years ago will be boosted, along with the preservation of the traditional low fat diet of the common Indonesian
