Brest region enjoys a rich cultural and artistic heritage that dates back many centuries, taking in several significant schools of art and architecture and producing many unique musical and literary works. All survived masterpieces are now officially protected by the state, and showcased for all to enjoy in museum collections and libraries. Classic works of Belarusian music and drama are regularly staged in concert halls and theatres across the region.
We can distinguish painting from other kinds of art in Brest region. Fine art in Brest region varies in style, direction and genre. The most captivating work by artists in different periods can be seen in museums across Belarus and other countries. Nowadays Brest artists are known not only in Belarus but also in Poland, Germany, the USA, Holland, Italy, France and other countries and some of them are Napoleon Orda, Vladimir Sheresewsky, Lev Alimоv, Vladislav Kufko.
Napoleon Orda is a famous artist, pianist and composer whose life and activity were always associated with Belarus. Napoleon Orda was born on February 11th, 1807 in the village Varacevichy (now Ivanava district Brest region). Orda graduated from Svisloch High School in 1823 and entered Vilnius University where he was studying physics and mathematics. Here Orda joined an illegal students’ organization “Zaryane” and was excluded from the fourth course for participation in this organization. Napoleon Orda took part in the uprising of 1830–1831. He received the main Polish military award the Virtuti Military for his bravery. After the uprising he had to go to Europe to escape from punishment and sending to Siberia for taking part in the revolt. He lived in Austria, Switzerland, Italy and finally in September 1833 he received the status of an emigrant in France and remained in Paris. From this time music and painting became his main priorities. He got acquainted with many well-known people in Europe – А. Mitskevich, F. Chopen, F. List and others. They had great impact on his talent. He was the director of the Italian Opera in Paris from 1847 till it was closed because of the February Revolution of 1848. Orda returned to Belarus in 1856 after Alexander II had announced the amnesty to political immigrants. He left his stable life and successful career in Paris to return to Varacevichy at the age of forty-nine. Then he moved to Grodno (1862–1863), and later to Volyn, where he worked as a teacher of music in General Adam Rzewuski' family. Orda created near 1,115 water-colours and graphic works. Among them over 200 sketches were with views of towns of Belarus. These pictures describe us life of famous people and architectural monuments, such as Kamenets Tower, castles, monasteries and palaces at Mir, Navagrudak, Niasvizh and Grodno and many others. Nowadays his pictures are kept in Krakow, Warsaw, Lviv. A large collection of his lithographs are kept at the National Library of Belarus. He is also known as a composer. Orda is the author of over 20 polonaises, waltzes, mazurkas, serenades and nocturnes. Napoleon Orda died in Warsaw on April, 26 1883. According to his testament he was buried in Janov (now Ivanovo Brest region) in his family crypt. In 2007 the celebration of Napoleon Orda’s 200th birth anniversary was included in the calendar of UNESCO’s memorable dates. His picture of Niasvizh Castle was placed on the banknote of Br 100 000.
Vladimir Sheresewsky was born on 25 September, 1863 in Brest-Litovsk. He was a painter and also a graphic artist. He studied mathematics in Warsaw and in Moscow. In 1892 he moved to Munich and took up painting. At that time he took part in different exhibitions. In Munich he married a German girl Elizabeth von Herft and had two daughters – Elfrid and Agaya. In 1895 his 2 pictures exhibited in Glasspalast in Munich, draw attention of Antonio Fradeletto, a general secretary of the exhibition in Venice. Vladimir was invited to come to Venice together with his family. He decided to stay there thought being a Russian. In the second Venice exhibition (1897) the painter showed outstanding pictures – “A halt to Siberia” and a – “A Patriotic Song”. They were highly praised there by the local press. The picture “A halt to Siberia” was bought by the Queen of Italy Margaret and later it was presented to the International gallery of modern art in Venice. In 1899 Vladimir Sheresewsky took part in The Third Bienalle as a member of The Union of Italian painters and sculptors, with his picture “In the church”. In 1905 his works were exhibited in the 6th Biannale in the room of Venice painting and in 1914 – in the 11th Biennale (“A woman’s head”). During his stay in Italy he had psychiatric problem (because of unfair arrest). He had a mania of chasing and as a result – he became obsessed by his painting – “A Secret Dinner”, which was not finished anyway. Since 1914 he had been cured at a psychiatric hospital on the island San Servolo. In spite of his illness he went on his creative working. In 1926 his painting “A pessimist” was bought by a royal family, thanks to the mediation of Antonio Fradeletto. As the painter’s biographer thinks, Vladimir Sheresewsky input to the artistic life of Venice is that he gives lessons to one of the outstanding painters of modern Venice painting – Gino Rossi.
Lev Alimоv was born on November 26th, 1945 in the city of Brest (Belarus). He graduated from Moscow School of Art of the Memory of 1905 (1970). The painter works in the easel and book drawing. Lev Alimоv has been taking part in art exhibitions since 1970. He is a prize-winner of 17 international competition exhibitions of graphic art. He has held his personal exhibitions in Belarus, Russia, Germany and the USA. This talented artist is a member of the academician of drawing of the Belarusian Academy of Fine Arts (1995). The international biographic center (Cambridge, Great Britain) called him “The Man of the Year”, having awarded him with the medal “For achievements in the XXth century”. The works are in museums and picture galleries of Belarus, Russia, the USA, Spain, the Netherlands, France, Japan, Switzerland, Bulgaria, Poland, England, the Ukraine, Germany, Italy. He was awarded with the medal of the Belarusian Artists' Union (BAU) “For success in fine arts”. Alimov has been a member of the BAU since 1989. He lives in Brest.
Vladislav Kufko was born on November the 8th 1955 in Brest. In 1974 he graduated from Glebov Art School in Minsk. The artist works in easel painting in genres of portrait, still-life and also in easel graphic. Since 1974 he has been a participant of regional, republican, All-Union, foreign and international exhibitions. From 1985 to 1993 he had 6 personal exhibitions (in Brest, in Poland and in Holland). He was rewarded with a silver medal at the “Young Artist” exhibition in Moscow (1987). Since 1987 he has been a member of the Belarusian Artist Union. He is a member of Artists’ Union of Poland. The painter’s works are presented at the largest museums and art galleries of Minsk, Brest, in private collections of many countries of Europe and America.
