OCULUS RIFT – THE HEAD-MOUNTED DISPLAY

OF VIRTUAL REALITY

Virtual reality (VR) was first introduced in 1972 by the American computer artist Myron Krueger. Today, Virtual Reality sometimes referred to as immersive multimedia is a computer-simulated environment that can simulate physical presence in places in the real world or imagined worlds. Virtual reality can recreate sensory experiences, which include virtual taste, sight, smell, sound, and touch.

The concept of virtual reality has been around for decades, even though the public really only became aware of it in the early 1990s [2]. Virtual Reality dates back to 1960s, when Morton Heilig built his “Sensorama”, a projection booth with a 3D display, stereo sound and a vibrating seat. It produced smells and sensations. Thereafter, American scientist Ivan Sutherland creates the first VR head-mounted display system. His device is so large and heavy that it has caused inconvenience in use. Also occurs popularization of the term “virtual reality”. After a period of stagnation in the development of virtual reality the first VR games are produced in the early 90s. Players put VR goggles on and enter gaming machines for an immersive real-time VR gaming experience. At this time, the period of active development of virtual reality technology and 3D begins.

The history of Oculus Rift begins in 2011, when 18-year old Palmer Lucky makes a rough prototype of the VR headset Oculus Rift and launches a Kickstarter campaign to fund its development. Thereafter Facebook purchases Oculus VR for $2bn. Also, some companies, such as Google and Sony start to develop their own virtual reality helmet [1].

The use of Oculus Rift enables its users to experience a variety of sensations such as sense of space and scale, sensations of falling, and more. Research has shown that VR makes it easier to evoke emotions in users as well, whether they are positive emotions like happiness and exhilaration or negative ones like fear and panic. Oculus Rift is lightweight and simple to learn that allows anyone to use it.

The Rift is a first approach to offer a low-cost head-mounted display that offers great horizontal and vertical field-of-view combined with HD resolution and is comfortable to wear. The device features HD quality video resolution, the lowest latency seen in VR yet (ensuring little to no lag in head movement tracking), and a wide field of view (90° horizontal and 110° vertical) covering a user's entire field of vision without head movement. It’s good enough to create what is reportedly the strongest immersion experience seen in VR, all at a price point circling $300 competitive with other products [3].

Weighing just less than a pound, the Oculus Rift has ports to connect to a computer, such as HDMI and USB. The Oculus Rift DK2 ships with a tracking camera, which is designed to strengthen the Rift’s ability to track your head movements. The goggles include multiple lens cups, allowing you to get a clear view of the action. For example, the older DK1 model had a worse display, though the screen was 7 inches bigger.

Picture a set of ski goggles in which a large cellphone screen replaces the glass. The screen displays two images side by side, one for each eye. A set of lenses is placed on top of the screen, focusing and reshaping the picture for each eye, and creating a 3D image. The goggles have embedded sensors that monitor the wearer's head motions and adjust the image accordingly. The latest version of the Oculus Rift is bolstered by an external positional-tracking accessory, which helps track head movements more accurately. The result is the sensation that you are looking around a 3D world [4].

In the early 1990s, the public’s exposure to virtual reality rarely went beyond a relatively primitive demonstration of a few blocky figures being chased around a chessboard by a crude pterodactyl. While the entertainment industry is still interested in virtual reality applications in games and theatre experiences, the really interesting uses for VR systems are in other fields.

Some architects create virtual models of their building plans so that people can walk through the structure before the foundation is even laid. Car companies have used VR technology to build virtual prototypes of new vehicles, testing them thoroughly before producing a single physical part. Virtual environments are used in training programs for the military, the space program and even medical students. The military have long been supporters of VR technology and development. Training programs can include everything from vehicle simulations to squad combat. On the whole, VR systems are much safer and, in the long run, less expensive than alternative training methods. Soldiers who have gone through extensive VR training have proven to be as effective as those who trained under traditional conditions.

In medicine, staff can use virtual environments to train in everything from surgical procedures to diagnosing a patient. Surgeons have used virtual reality technology to not only train and educate, but also to perform surgery remotely by using robotic devices. Another medical use of VR technology is psychological therapy. Dr. Barbara Rothbaum of Emory University and Dr. Larry Hodges of the Georgia Institute of Technology pioneered the use of virtual environments in treating people with phobias and other psychological conditions [2].

It is unclear exactly where the future of virtual reality is heading. In the short run, the graphics displayed in the Head Motion Display, suсh as Oculus Rift will soon reach a point of near realism. The audio capabilities will move into a new realm of three dimensional sound. This refers to the addition of sound channels both above and below the individual. The virtual reality application of this future technology will most likely be in the form of over ear headphones.

Within existing technological limits, sight and sound are the two senses which best lend themselves to high quality simulation. There are however attempts being currently made to simulate smell. It is worth mentioning that simulating smells, while it can be done very realistically, requires costly research and development to make each odor, and the machine itself is expensive and specialized, using capsules tailor made for it.

In conclusion we can say that Oculus Rift is a very promising project with great potential for development. The use of this device will help to advance in all branches of science, as well as it will make an enormous contribution to the development of the gaming industry. We think that virtual reality helmet Oculus Rift is one of the biggest projects that will change the world of computing.
