Have you ever thought that so much of our day is spent with devices that tell us where to go and what to do, that entertain and inform us, track our health and manage our minutes? It really seems impossible to think of life without them. We're so increasingly dependent on our electronic companions that they don't just live with us, they live on us. Wearable tech can deliver messages from friends, tell you when to pack an umbrella, and even manage music. Health-minded devices count your steps and calories.
For all our gadgets do for us, we certainly repay them with loyalty. When something new comes along we feel the same pull we felt toward our timeworn device just a year or two before. At first we tell ourselves the tech we have is enough, that we can admire without acquiring. But we inevitably give up and buy a new piece of tech.
People of different ages were asked the same question: What gadgets can you just not live without nowadays? And the most popular of them are:
8. ATM Machines – Very few people carry cash on hand. Their money is attached to a bank account which you have a little card for. If you do not have cash on hand and need it, you run to an ATM machine. If you are in a store, rather than write out a check and hold up the line, you probably swipe your card. It makes life simpler in all ways and most people would be lost without the ability to use their ATM machines and debit cards.
7. E-reader – Do you live a busy life and have no time for reading? Do you prefer a particular genre like the Fifty Shades of Grey series? This is no problem – you can read these kinds of books in public, and only you will know it. You can read in transport, cafes and parks or any other spare minute if you have your E-reader.
6. MP3 player – Music players promote harmony at the workplace and in public places. Employees can listen to their preferred tunes without annoying their neighbors. Other music lovers can enjoy it everywhere they go without being interrupted.
5. Digital camera – We miss the surprise in developing a roll of film, but the digital camera saves hundreds of dollars in processing costs and gives us twenty times more chances to take a good picture. It will save lots of memories for you and help you enjoy the best moments of your life again and again.
4. Headphones – There is something really intimate about the spoken voice, and listening in the equally intimate way over headphones helps us channel the individuals and connect to them better.
3. TV – Television brings the world to our living room. We see people in our country and in other lands, and learn of their customs, occupations, opinions and problems.
2. Computer – Across all industries, computers are in the center of how businesses operate. Seriously, can you imagine running your business without one? Everything is computerized nowadays: education, transport, production, communication, entertainment and what is not.
1. Mobile phones – Before the telephone, humans wrote letters by hand and waited days, weeks and sometimes months for their messages to get delivered. Thanks to the invention of the telephone, and eventually the mobile phone, news can be shared instantly and from just about anywhere. The immediacy of communication is priceless. We’d never go back to living without them. Control and accessibility make life more secure.
Gadgets are hugely important and many people find that they cannot live without their gadgets. Here are top 5 reasons why you can’t live without your gadgets.
1. We need to be in touch
Gadgets are great because they make communication so much easier. Nowadays, you have an endless choice in the amount of ways you can get in touch with someone.
2. How else can you look busy?
Young adults may not remember this but taking a bus trip or a train ride by yourself used to be really boring. With smart phones, tablets and all manner of gadgets, this is no longer the case. You can have fun, keep up to date with the latest news or indulge yourself in whatever activity you enjoy the most.
3. Gadgets can help you improve
One of the things about gadgets is that they should be about improving your life. Whether this comes through making your life easier or helping you to get more from life, a good gadget will positively impact your world.
4. Gadgets are part of daily life
Gadgets are now such a massive part of everyday life that if we lost them, a large part of our life would go missing them. This means that if our gadgets stop working we will likely struggle to be as productive or remain in touch as often as we would like to.
5. They look great
People want to be seen as being cool and what better way to look like a trend-setter than with the latest gadget? A lot of people let their personality, or at least their hope for personality, shine through in the gadgets that they use.
So, modern people commonly use various gadgets for various reasons. It has become a reason to ask ourselves a question “Are we becoming a gadget addicted generation?” There has been much debate between psychiatrists and psychologists whether there is such a thing as gadget addiction. Recent surveys have established that children and youth spend nearly eight hours a day looking at media (cell phones, desktop and laptop computers, Mp3 players, television, etc.). Yet, other people say the proper word is “dependent,” not addicted. Addiction is associated with individual choice to smoke, drink, and take drugs. It means personal weakness. Consider the spread of popular technologies as they have become habitual features of the culture. Think of telephone, cars, planes, and television. They have become daily patterns in our lives. And that is normal. Addiction, however, is abnormal.
As such, advancing technology is not something that should be stopped and certainly not something that can be stopped, but rather an evolving form to find a balance and adaptation to. Consider Socrates’ take on the invention of writing: “ [It] will create forgetfulness in the learners’ souls, because they will not use their memories; they will trust to the external written characters and not remember of themselves.” But so far it has proved to be indispensable and vital rather than harmful and destructive.
