Studıes on the Plantıng Desıgn of the Sultanahmet Square
Public squares, which are important focal points of urban open spaces, symbolizes the city culture with significant functionalities. All city squares has been a scene which include a daily life and remarkable happenings, from ancient Agora of Greek to contemporary squares. Squares are gathering and parting places as well as being the venue for social, cultural, religional and politic events. At the present day, city squares has a intensive usage about recreational requirements by urban inhabitants as well as provide to keep joint heritage which give an identity to cities.
Sultanahmet district is significant historical city center which has been a important point of Byzantine and Ottoman civilizations. This historical area moving a traces of past to the future with many examples of monumenatal buildings and civil architects. The negative effects of rapid consumption, can be felt intensively in Sultanahmet district like many historical environment. Therefore, historical values of this area need to be protected, life quality need to be heighten up, old cultural places need to be freshen and all district should be converted into a harmonious living place which one integrated by physical and socio-cultural aspects.
In this context, current architectural buildings and woody plants which are used in floral designs, are intended to be identified and evaluation of effects is planned. Research field is divided into five regions. Different numbers have given for each plant in this regions. All numbered woody plants have been identified by visual properties like species, characters, lengths, top width, diameter of stem and health status. All detections were transferred to the tables with different values for each plants, moreover they have been processed into survey plot.
As a result of the indentified plants, determination is made trees and shrubs in the area of 827 tall and small trees, 146 shrubs, 5 vines, 4 single annual plants, altogether 983 plants including 1 climber. The most common types are 827 tall and small trees in the research area. Consist of; 136 Aesculus hippocastanum, 132 Lagerstroemia indica, 64 Ligustrum lucidum, 44 Cedrus deodora, 40 Acer negundo, 34 Platanus orientalis, 28 Tilia tomentosa, 28 Ailanthus altissima, 23 Morus alba, 20 Ligustrum ovalifolium, 18 Robinia pseudoacacia, 17 Euonymus japonica, 15 Cupressus sempervirens, 14 Taxus baccata. The most common types are 146 shrubs in the research area. Consist of; 24 Nerium oleander, 18 Pittosporum tobira, 17 Euonymus japonica, 10 Juniperus horizontalis.
In the area of research plant design, were evaluated types of contents visual effects and venue of compliance issues. Furtermore species of design elements and in line with principles were evaluated. Sultanahmet Square and green spaces around on the additional of existing species, in this state was seen to be green spaces of confusion and of without aesthetic. In conclusion, the region have rich floristic diversity, should be used the proper function of historical texture having the species. Suggest have got about arrangements principles and species which will become suitable use in plant design.
