Designing a Battery Management System for Lithium Polymer Batteries
In this master’s thesis, a battery management system prototype is practiced as voltage, temperature values of high capacity lithium polymer batteries are measured and viewed by a computer software.
First chapters of this thesis includes the purpose and necessity of the battery management systems. Then, functions of the battery management system, aims of these functions and the circumstances, requirements are presented. Electric vehicles are more important in recent years, management systems of some companies are analyzed and samples are shown.
In this master’s thesis, 33x34mm board of isolated communication, power and measurement units is designed and connected in parallel to 4 serial lithium polymer batteries. Communication interface is RS485 and the boards are supplied from the batteries. Battery surface temperature is measured with LM35 sensors. Boards of measurement and communication algorithms, which are implemented by a 8-bit microcontroller, are connected in the same communication line. Also a computer software which is communicating with these measurement units and displaying the datas is performed in this master’s thesis. As a result of the experiments, the capacity of the designed battery management system is presented by comparing off the shelf commercial management systems and the designed management system’s all possible functions. The view for better systems is explained with arguments as development of the designed system.
