Production of Activated Carbon From Agricultural Waste
Activated carbon; carbon-containing structure of all kinds of natural or synthetic starting material can be produced that have large internal surface area and number of pores with different diameters, a widely used liquid and gas applications.
Although there is no limit to the production of activated carbon raw materials, low inorganic content, cheap raw materials with high carbon content , are preferred for the production of activated carbon. Activated carbon production occurs in two stages. They are carbonization and activation.
Carbonization process; raw material by removing moisture and volatile matter with heat treatment in a inert environment that formed the basic structure of the pore. Activation prosess is an oxidation process. This is performed in two different method, pyhsical and chemical. Generally, the pysical activation is performed with water vapor and carbondioxide. Chemical substances such as phosphoric acid, zinc chloride, sulfuric acid is performed chemical activation.
In this study; pyhsical and chemical activation methods of agricultural waste such as nutshell, orange peel, and melon seeds were produced of activated carbon. The activated carbon was obtained from different raw materials, the solid product yields were calculated. Functional groups of activated carbon were determined by FTIR analysis and the surface porosity of the material was examined by SEM. And also activated carbons were used acetic acid adsorption. The results of adsorption were applied adsorption isoterm charts.
