Evaluation of Natural Plant Cover for Soil and Water Conservation

Practices in Semi-arid Regions (Çankırı Province)
Soil is one of our most important natural resources since it is the basis of production. The Anatolian territory, has been hosting human for centuries and exposed to intervention of mankind since the first human has appeareal on it, is losing a large amount of soil every year with erosion as a result of land misuse. Therefore, soil conservation and rehabilitation studies are still main subjects of our country.
Araes receiving between 100-300 mm of rainfall defined as arid, and areas receiving between 300-600 mm of rainfall are defined as semi-arid. As seen from the precipitation map, Turkey has no arid areas, but semi-arid areas cover 1/3 of the country according to the definition above. Plant succession is slow in these araes not only because of water deficit but also other problems such as salinity. Thus, natural vegetation adapted to area has great importance for studies of soil conservation and rehabilitation.
The species that can be used for soil conservation and rehabilitation studies in the study area, most of the area is semi arid, has been analyzed and their effect on the soil structure has been tried to understand. The identified species are given in order of importance with vegetation and topography type. The dominant species of the area is Quercus macranthera subsp. syspirensis. This species observed in the 8 of 25 sample areas. Beside this species, Pinus nigra subsp. pallasiana, Quercus pubescens, Juniperus oxycedrus subsp. oxycedrus, Juniperus nana, Ulmus minor has been observed as woody plants. Crataegus orientalis, Pyrus elaeagnifolia subsp. elaeagnifolia, Prunus divaricata subsp. ursina has been observed as wild fruit trees, Tamarix smyrnensis has been observed in base lands and stream sides and Amygdalus orientalis has been observed on the gypsium bedrock. Rosa dumalis, Rosa canina, Paliurus spina-christi are some of the recommended species has been observed on volcanic rocks in severely degraded areas.
Astragalus gossypinus, Hedysarum nitidum, Genista sessilifolia, Acantholimon venustum, Artemisia austriaca has been observed as herbaceous plants. Gypsophyla simulatrix on the gypsium bedrock, Glycyrrhiza glabra var. glandulifera on the dry stream beds and Rhus coriaria on the moving debris are some of the recommended species for rehabilitation and revegetation studies in the study area.
