The furniture was very old, and the coffee table, I was told, was something my father had constructed in a high school wood shop class. They had an old black and white TV in the kitchen that they turned on when my brother and I would visit. While I remember thinking they were very poor, I also recall some very fond memories there. For some reason, they had saved many of my dad’s old toys, including a metal Dick Tracy cap gun…. They were very different than the toys my brother and I played with, and I knew instinctively that they were special. “Two of my grandmother’s sisters, Frieda and Lilly, would stop in on my grandmother’s apartment when my brother and I visited. I liked Frieda quite a bit; she was very warm and friendly, and always happy. Lilly was very beautiful when she was young, but she suffered from throat cancer and, by the time I entered the world, she had had a tracheotomy. Their daughter Elaine notes that both Joseph and Henrietta spoke “perfect midwestern English,” with the result that Elaine didn’t realize she was a first generation American until she was about 40 years old. In the mid-1980s Joseph wrote a letter to his great grandson, Ricky, in which he described his native Belarus and immigration to the U.S.: “Some day I will tell you about our big farm house. We had a cow, chickens and geese, horse, and covered wagon just like the ones we used to see in our own West… lots of woodland and a lake for fishing and swimming, and bird nests in the hayloft, an orchard and garden…. I always wanted to go back there, but it was a long, long journey and I just grew up dreaming about it. My mother and six of the younger children left there in 1906.
