Dear Colleague,
This period has been an eventful one in many respects.
The academic programmes of the Centre have been progressing very well and the publications record is growing from strength to strength. The Nano Science Laboratory equipped with the state-of-the art facilities for advance research in material sciences, was inaugurated by Shri Kapil Sibal, Hon'ble Minister for S&T and Earth Sciences, Govt. of India on 23rd September 2006.
Our proposal to establish the International Centre for Material Science has been accepted by the DST, and this was formally announced by the Hon'ble Minister Shri Kapil Sibal, during his visit to the Centre. The activities of the Centre will encompass the research efforts of the facilities of CPMU and TSU. In addition, this Centre will facilitate a broader collaboration with international scientists in the area of material sciences.
The Centre also hosted the first Science Meet of DST institutions held during 23-24 September 2006, at the request of Dr. T. Ramasami, Secretary, DST wherein the heads of all DST autonomous institutions made presentations about their activities. This event gave an opportunity for many of us to share the scientific accomplishments and excitement amongst ourselves.
The Extension Programme activities like SRFP, POCE, POBE have been highly successful. The first batch of the POCE students have completed their 3 year POCE course during July 2006. We have also started JNC Research Conference in Chemistry to facilitate detailed discussion on contemporary areas of interest. A Similar programme is being planned in the area of biomedical sciences during the next year.
The 10th Plan period is just coming to an end and the Centre has prepared a vision document for the 11th Plan period, where several new academic programmes are being contemplated. With the active support of DST and in particular, our new Secretary Dr. T.Ramasami, we hope to continuously grow with appropriate infrastructure to make this Centre an institution of international importance.
