Ernest, the eldest child of Gottlieb and Marie Heinrich was Born: at Point Pass on 17^thSeptember 1887. He attended the school at Point Pass and was confirmed by Pastor Leidig on 14^thOctober 1900. He worked for a time at Uncle Dick Weckert’s farm before moving to Western Australia at the age of 17 years. A letter to his sister Annie written in 1906 said he was working on the Trans Continental Railway Line training to be an engine driver. His mother died in 1909 and for whatever reason, he changed his name to John Ernest Hughes and had no contact with his family again. He moved to Sydney and met his future wife Elsie Luhr there. She was named as his next of kin on his enlistment papers—he joined to A.I.F. on 19^thDecember 1916. He was a train driver during the war and was taken prisoner in April 1918 and released in November 1918. He returned to Sydney in May 1919 where he married Elsie Luhr in July 1919. Their daughter Eva was Born: in July 1920 in Summer Hill, N.S.W..

Jack and Elsie moved into a house at Belmore in 1922—a War Service Home financed by the government for returned soldiers. Like his sibling back in South Australian he had green fingers as he grew many fruit trees, vegetables and flowers with the fowl yard at the back. He was pleased to be able to plant Sturt Desert Peas which flowered—a reminder of his home in South Australia. After his return from the war, he suffered from asthma and often had to sit in the gutter before he could gain strength enough to walk again. His younger brother Gottlieb (also Jack) was gassed in the trenches and suffered much the same on his return. In 1928 Jack Hughes was working in the Newcastle area as a pile driver and whilst instructing a man how to use the pile driver, he was hurt and taken to the Newcastle Hospital. Unfortunately, he died of his injuries a few days later. Eva was only 8yrs old when her father died and he was buried in Rookwood Cemetery in the Independent Section.

Elsie never re-married and was 3 days short of 96 years of age when she died in 1986. Eva married James Graycon in September 1941 and he died in 1985 in Summer Hill. They had 3 children– Wendy, Peter and Robyn all married and producing—grandchildren for Eva and 2 great grandchildren.

Eva is not sure if her mother ever knew that her father had changed his name from Heinrich to Hughes and when she and her daughter Wendy were trying to trace their family tree, they came up against a dead-end with regard to Hughes ancestors.

On checking his army records and marriage certificate, they found he had been born near Kapunda in South Australia and his mother’s name was Marie Elizabeth Jericho. After contacting the Lutheran Archives in Adelaide, she made contact with the Jericho Family Committee and a big gap in the Heinrich family tree has now been filled.

Eva and her daughter Wendy came to Adelaide, in September 2005 to meet her “previously unknown” first cousins, Ilona Oppenheim, Glen Koop and Dora Schwarz. Of course she visited the old farm at St. Kitts, the cemeteries at Kapunda and St. Kitts for the Jericho connection and the old house, church, school and cemetery at Point Pass where her father was born and spent his early life. Photos were exchanged and much talk ensued to help her understand the type of people and their way of life here in South Australia. Their father was always remembered in family get-togethers and now the mystery of “missing Uncle Ernst” has been solved and the Marie Elizabeth Heinrich story is complete.

Eva Graycon’s Memories of her father John Ernest Hughes

My strongest memory is of my father leaning on his spade in our garden.

After the war he was eligible for a War Service Home and he chose this huge block of land with very good soil at the bottom of a small hill in Belmore.

He loved to garden and there were lots of flowers, especially roses, both sides of the front path, and dahlias from the front fence to the end of the house. Also all types of fruit trees, loganberries, strawberries and veggies.

Remember my father growing Sturt Desert Peas. If I recall correctly, he burnt the seeds, planted them and they flowered. Now I know why he was so excited - it reminded him of his home state.

After the war, not before, my Dad suffered from asthma-badly enough to receive a small war pension.

I feel sure he went to W.A. I understand he went to Broome and also worked on the building of the transcontinental railway. Remember hearing of the huge Jarrah trees and how they were used as sleepers on the railway.

Do not know how or why he came to Sydney. Think he met my mother through a mutual friend. I do not know if my Mum knew about his changed name.

The Jericho name…The wedding certificate asked for the Christian and Maiden name of his Mother and without this knowledge we would never have traced him.

The story I was told is that my Dad got drunk and was too scared to go home—so he left. Perhaps this could be verified?
