Nanophoxonics
Subject: We will develop nanophoxonics corresponding to the converging combination of the strong electromagnetic confinement controlled at the nanometer scale (nanophotonics) and the local control and analysis of phonon emission (nanophononics). The first goal is to exploit ultimate optical non-linearities in state-of-the art high quality factor (larger than 2 millions) photonic crystals to enhanced photon-phonon local interaction. The other goal is to explore the optical and phononic properties at the nanometer scale of i) single semiconductors quantum dots seen as acoustic and thermal nanosources and ii) photonic and iii) phononic crystals.
Expertises: This project relies on the group capability in the design, nanofabrication and optical characterisation of silicon photonic crystals for electromagnetic confinement and the expertise in the ultrasensitive and unique nanospectroscopy of single quantum dot ultrasmall absorptions and nanodeformations. Three dimensional electromagnetic, electronic structure and electron-phonon modellings also play a key role.
Aimed devices: We will develop Silicon Raman lasers with enhanced low noise properties. We will investigate quantum dot phonon amplification and the realization of a quantum dot based THz SASER (S=Sound). We will develop silicon and diamond nanodetectors for single biomolecule ultrasensitive detection based on enhanced optical non-linearities at room temperature. Valorisation, i.e. proof of concept devices and industrial transfer, will occurs through our collaborative efforts with CEA-NanoINNOV.

Evaluation
-
Date dernière évaluation (AERES ou autre): 2 December 2008
-
Note obtenue (ou autre : comment justifiez vous l’équivalent A+/A AERES ?):
A : the notation was obtained through the evaluation of a broader research department (Nanophotonics and ultrafast electronics) of IEF that includes 15 permanent researchers and four research groups with distinct scientific problematics. A criticism was related the coherence of the activities within this research department. It is therefore not relevant for our single IEF-QD group. Since this evaluation, X. Checoury has received a Chaire d'excellence of university Paris-Sud in collaboration with CEA. Only two such "Chaire d'excellence" were given at the university in 2009 in all scientific fields, highlighting the high selectivity of this process. The same assistant professor was also granted in 2010 a highly selective ANR Young researcher grant. Invited talks in international conferences and workshops have continued to be given by member of the groups

Organisation: Décrire l’organisation et le mode de gestion actuel du partenaire
Our group gathers 5 highly collaborative permanent researchers of broad nanophotonic culture with a sough-after interpenetration of expertises. One of them is chosen as the group leader, representing, supporting and explaining at the outside the group goals and achievements. Each member develops his own specific activity either hand in hand with one or two other group members or in constant scientific discussion with the others for the benefit of the whole group flowering.
The search for unity is a constant background driving force of the group life. In our case, the group get closer Maxwell electromagnetic control at the nanometer scale and Schrodinger electronic confinement exploration in semiconductor nanostructures. Our common glue is phonons either through photon-phonon enhanced non-linear interaction in high quality factor (>2 millions) photonic crystals or electron-phonon strong coupling in semiconductor quantum dots for exploration and control of phonon generation at the nanometer scale. We refer to this combination as nanophoxonics where x means either t or n.
In the group each member financial contracts is managed in coherence with one another, maximizing common goals and scientific quality.
Our group offers space for personal dynamism where applied, basic, experimental and theoretical research interests find a natural place. Group website http://pages.ief.u-psud.fr/QDgroup
