Abstract. The problem of identity and origin of peoples is always topical. A theoretical basis for studying the problem of identity, self-identification is the time-tested works. Thus, the well-known scientific work «Chronicle of Roman-Moldo-Wallachian Ancient Times» by the ruler of the Moldavian principality Dimitry Cantemir, the great educator and humanist, is of interest even today within the framework of population migration and the formation of new diasporas.
