PONs have a number of advantages. PONs gives long range between central office and 
users. These can give access to over 20 kms of distance. It is protocol independent due to 
presence of passive components so any protocol can be used. At the same time there is no 
maintenance or power requirement for passive components.

Services Offered 
One of the advantages of FTTH is that it is backward compatible. All the existing 
equipment like POTS, PC’s (Personal Computers) Ethernet NIC (Network Interface 
Card), Televisions, Fax machines can still be used with this system, as standard interfaces 
are available. The existing equipment can still be used but off course with improved 
performance. The ONT at the FTTH subscriber’s end can have all these types of 
interfaces available in the form of different jacks and one just has to plug in the old 
equipment. Some of the services offered are: 
 Expanded local telephone service where multiple phone lines can be provided 
over a single fiber along with other services.

 High speed Internet access in the range of hundreds or even thousands of Mbps is 
available from such network. 
 Multimedia services (HDTV, video conferencing, video monitoring, video on 
demand, movies, interactive gaming etc) can found FTTH as an ideal choice 
because of bandwidth available. 
 Leased line services can also be provided as per the requirements. 
 Sharing large amount of data or files on corporate network from any where in the 
network, making a VPN (Virtual Private Network). In this way a secure network 
can be established. 
These are some of the proposed services and there could be number of other possibilities. 
It all depends upon the market demand.
