CD3: 11 Astronaut training Before
astronauts can fly into space they have a lot of
training. What do they have to do?
1 Astronauts are space scientists. They work in space
laboratories. They have to study a lot and learn about
space science and technology. They must be good at
languages, too. All astronauts must speak English, and
many learn Russian.
2 Astronauts are also space pilots. They must learn to
fly a spacecraft to the International Space Station and
back down to Earth. They learn on a simulator of the
spacecraft they’re going to fly.
3 In space, astronauts float in zero gravity. Astronauts train
for this in special aircraft. Floating looks fun, but zero
gravity is a strange feeling, and it can make you feel sick.
4 Astronauts have to walk in space when they work
outside the International Space Station. They practice
this by learning to scuba dive. Being underwater feels
similar to being in space. Astronauts wear spacesuits
underwater and practice moving around in them.
5 All astronauts must be very fit and healthy.
They have to exercise every day.

Students read the sentences. Check that they understand
aircraft . Play the recording again, pausing for students to
choose.

1 6 Talk about space travel with a friend. •
Play the example dialog while students read the prompts.
•
Make pairs. Students share their opinions, using the speech
bubbles to help them. They report back, e.g.,
Larisa thinks space travel is scary. She wouldn’t like to travel to a space station, but she’d like to see Earth from space.
