Job Description http://www.environment.gov.au/jobs/opportunities/index.html
Duties
Become part of our team of world class researchers and analysts to contribute to the regulation of uranium mining in the Northern Territory and protection of Kakadu National Park.
We are seeking an experienced hydrogeologist with capabilities in groundwater geochemistry and contaminant
transport modelling, relevant to the assessment of mining-related groundwater impacts.
Within the Heritage, Reef and Marine Division, the Supervising Scientist Branch oversees the management of mining activities within the Alligator Rivers Region, aiming to ensure that these activities are conducted in a way that prevents environmental impacts.
The Supervision and Monitoring team is responsible
for a range of supervision, audit and inspection functions. Key activities include periodic environmental audits and technical reviews of uranium mining and exploration activities, assessments of proposals and applications, reviews of standards and guidelines, and continuous assessment of environmental monitoring data.
The successful candidate will lead the Supervising Scientist Branch’s groundwater team in providing expert advice (externally and internally) on groundwater issues related to environmental impacts of mining. This will involve participation
in mine supervision, assessment and research activities as they relate to the ongoing assessment and management of groundwater in relation to mining in the Alligator Rivers Region, including:
-
Provision of strategic oversight of groundwater-related assessments
-
Production of high quality reports that document assessment outcomes
-
Coordination of collaboration and engagement between the Supervising Scientist Branch, specialist consultants and other government agencies on complex hydrogeological and geochemical matters.
Notes
Non-ongoing opportunity will be offered for a specified term
Ongoing and non-ongoing positions may be available from this recruitment exercise.
If a non-ongoing position is available, the job opportunity may be for specified period of up to 18 months with a possible extension up to 3 years, as per the Public Service Regulations 1999, Subregulation 3.5 (3).
