***9. (i) Project Title: PROFILE OF HAEMATOLOGICAL PARAMETERS TO DETERMINE THE HEALTH STATUS OF BANDED GOURAMI Colisa fasciata IN WEST BENGAL.

ii. Introduction:

Banded Gourami (Colisa fasciata) is an important ornamental fish and good food value. They are mainly occurring in large rivers, estuaries, ditches, pond and lakes, generally preferring weedy environment. This species is only restricted in India (Uttar Pradesh, Nagaland, Assam, West Bengal and Arunachal Pradesh), Bangladesh, Upper Myanmar and Pakistan. But in India, it has registered a fast decline over the last 20 years. Pollution of the river, ditch, agricultural field, lakes are harmful to aquatic life has contributed to the decline of the fishery of Colisa fasciata. In West Bengal, there is no information about Colisa fasciata. Thus, to determine the sub-lethal effect of pollutants, and to describe the general health condition of the fish, blood pressure such as Red blood cell (RBC), Haemoglobin (Hb), Hematocrit (Ht), Mean cellular volume (MCV). Mean cellular haemoglobin concentration (MCH) should be studied throughout the year. Physiological ecology of the fish should be incorporate in this study for future conservation plans and monitoring programme for the decline population of Colisa fasciata.

  Origin of the research problem:
  

One of the most straightforward and less invasive technique to asses the physiological and health status of a natural population of vertebrates is to analyze blood parameters. Although fish haematology continuous to offer the potential of a valuable tool, progress of a work in this field has been slow and literature in this area is isolated and often incomplete.

Age and season related changes in blood composition may occur in fish. A number of studies have shown a relationship between the blood characteristic of fish (hematocrit, size and number of red blood cells and haemoglobin concentration), physiological and for environmental studies.

Haematological studies on fishes have assumed greater significance due to the increasing emphasis on pisiculture and greater awareness of the pollution of natural freshwater resources in the tropics (Kori-Siakpere et al., 2005). Such studies have genetically been used as an effective and sensitive index to monitor physiological status of fishes (Iwane et al., 1967; Chakrabarty and Banerjee, 1988).

Freshwater is vital for various aquatic animals and plants but the quality of freshwater has been abruptly change due to the introduction of different chemicals including pesticides, industrial discharges, metallic pollutants etc. Aquatic systems are exposed to a number of pollutants that are mainly released from effluents discharged from industries, sewage treatment plants and drainage from urban and agricultural areas. These pollutants cause serious damage to aquatic life (Karbassi et al., 2006; Al Masri, 2002).

The project proposal will focus on the health status of Colisha fasciatus in relation to its habitat status. So the scientific investigations provide information on various fields of study i. e. from ecological, biological and physiological point of view.
