Investigation of Hydrocracking Reactions of Aromatic Model Compounds
There are several cracking methods for transforming petroleum into products with economically high value. Among of these methods, hydrocracking is the most efficient refining method to produce heavy hydrocarbons into lighter ones due to demand of lighter and more quality hydrocarbons. Petroleum is a complex mixture of organic compounds consisting of thousands of molecules. Therefore it is impossible to explain the occurent reactions during cracking. In this study, catalytic hydrocracking reactions of hydrocarbon compounds will be analyzed for explaining the real chemical kinetics created by cyclic molecules which are much in the structure of heavy oils and make it hard to refine petroleum. The information which will be obtained as a result of the reactions made by model compounds is aimed at being used as a resource to explain hydrocracking of petroleum. The goal in this research is investigation for the cheapest and the most efficient catalysts to convert cyclohydrocarbones to lighter products. We try to reduce the price of refinery process by paying attention to quality of products at the same time.

Two different feedstocks such as Naphthalene and Anthracene were used for experiments and effect of the best catalyst to achieve the best conversion rate were studied for these feeds. Reactions were applied in stainless steal bomb kind reactor with 10 ml volume capacity under 200 rpm speed for mixing. The catalyst which provided the least coke and the most conversion was investigated in this study therefore we applied different catalyst and mixture of them. FeSO4.H2O and mixture of it with metal oxides such as Fe2O3, Al2O3, CaO, SiO2; Fe2(SO4)3 and mixture of Al2O3 and also mixture FeSO4.H2O and Fe2O3, Al2O3, with elementary sulphur and mixture of Fe2(SO4)3 and Fe2O3, Al2O3, with elementary sulphur are used in this study. After choosing the best catalyst which gives the highest conversion, catalyst specializes. This special catalyst is used for hydrocracking process during 3 different temperatures such as 400, 425 and 450 °C during 5 various times 10 min, 20min, 40min, 60min and 90min. At the end of each reaction, achieved products and conversion rate of feeds such as naphthalene were analysed by Gas chromatography and Mass spectometry.
