Obtaining of Essential Oil from Citrus Leaves By Several Separation
Methods and İnvestigation of its Content
In Turkey, approximately 2.700.000 tons of citrus are cultivated every year. This cultivation is approximately 3 % of world’s total citrus cultivation. Turkey is among top 10 countries in world ranking with this production amount. The main citrus species that are cultivated are orange, mandarin, grapefruit, lemon and bitter orange. In Turkey, although citrus species are cultivated extensively, production of essential oil from these fruits is not so common. Orange oil is imported from countries like Brazil, England, France, Israel and Netherlands. Lemon oil is imported from countries like England, Spain, Brazil, Italy and Germany.
In this study, essential oils and extracts are obtained from Interdonato lemon, Mediterranean mandarin and bitter orange leaves that are cultivated in citrus cultivation area of Batı Akdeniz Agricultural Research Institute by hydrodistillation and supercritical fluid extraction. The chemical composition of products which are obtained by hydrodistillation method were analysed by Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectroscopy. Also, antioxidant capacity of essential oils and extracts of these three species were analysed by DPPH method. Total phenolic content of extracts were analysed by Folin Ciocalteu method.
51 components were identified in essential oil obtained from Interdonato lemon leaves. The chemical composition of this essential oil was composed of 63,56 % of monoterpene hydrocarbons, 0,63 % of sesquiterpene hydrocarbons and 36,64 % of oxygenated components. Essential oil that was obtained from bitter orange leaves was composed of 48 components. The most part of this essential oil is composed of 92,48 % of oxygenated components. 6,77 % of remained part of it is composed by monoterpene hydrocarbons. 0,64 % of it is composed by sesquiterpene hydrocarbons. 41 components was identified in essential oil obtained from Mediterranean mandarin leaves. This essential oil contains methyl-N-methyl anthranilate that does not include in other two oil and has chracteristic odour. The oil was composed of 42,00 % of monoterpene hydrocarbons, 1,24 % of sesquiterpene hydrocarbons and 56,68 % of oxygenated components.
When we consider antioxidant capacities of essential oils and extracts obtained from citrus species, it can be seen that the antioxidant capacity of products obtained from Mediterranean mandarin are the highest one. Products obtained from Interdonato lemon leaves have the lowest antioxidant capacity. Amount of total phenolic content resembles the situation that the antioxidant capacities of these three species have. Products obtained from Mediterranean mandarin leaves have the highest total phenolic content. Products obtained from Interdonato lemon leaves have the lowest total phenolic content.
