Investigation of Electrical and Mechanical Properties of Cyclo-Olefin
Copolymer (COC) Composites Reinforced With Carbon Based Fillers
In this study, electrical conductivity and mechanical properties of cyclo-olefin copolymer (COC) based composites which were prepared with melt processing method and include various types of carbon fillers, were investigated. Several carbon-based fillers, with different geometry and physical properties, such as carbon black, carbon fiber, graphite and expanded graphite were used. Series of samples including various amounts of fillers were prepared in a lab-scale twin screw extruder and the electrical conductivity values of samples were measured with an impedance analyzer which works with alternative current (AC) and a multimeter that works with direct current (DC). Mechanical and solid-state viscoelastic properties of samples were investigated in a dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA). The electrical conductivity properties of samples were studied by the conductivity tests depending on the geometry and physical properties of fillers and amount in the composition. Conductivity data were quantified to determine percolation threshold which is a critical physical parameter for the polymer based conductive composites. Variation in mechanical parameters such as modulus, phase angle depending on the geometry and physical properties of fillers and amount in the composition were investigated in detail by the DMA tests.
Furthermore, morphological properties of the fillers and some composites were characterized by microstructural investigation in a field emission gun scanning electron microscope (SEM).
