Modeling of Gravity Anomalies Using Genetic and Particle Swarm Algorithms
The prediction of the parameters belong to the buried mass causing the anomaly is named the inversion problem and various methods are developed in order to solve this problem. In this study, the prediction of the geophysical parameters causing the gravity anomalies are realized using optimization methods which are widely used in various disciplines.
These implemented methods are population based methods which don’t require computing the derivatives.
The first one of these methods is the Genetical Algorithm (GA) developed with the inspiration from evolution theory and used in the optimization problems. The latter is rather a intuitive optimization method called the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) developed with the inspiration from fish school and bird flock behaviors.

These techniques are adapted into the developed system to be used for predicting the model parameters of structures with various geometries in gravity method.

These systems are firstly tested on the theoric data and their performance on the parameter prediction is analysed. The results of these methods are compared to the Least Squares (LS) method which is used widely in geophysical inversion problems.

Following the successful results the methods are applied on the field data. As the field data, the gravity values extracted as two different profiles from the Bouguer anomaly map of the southwest Thrace Basin and the geometric parameters of the faults which are influenced the developement of the basin are predicted and the dipping angles of the fault systems are obtained approximately 700.

The probable geological models composed from the predicted parameters are considered with the results of the classical geophysical techniques such as Least Squares (LS) inversion and analitycal upward continuation methods.  In this processes the geological informations are also considered and an integrated study for the region is realized
