Success Analysis on Power Line Communication with Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing

Digital multimedia applications as they are getting common lately create an ever increasing demand for broad band communication systems. Although the technical requirements for related products are very high the solution must be cheap to implement since we are basically talking about consumer products.

Whereas for the satellite channel and for the cable channel such cost-efficient solutions already exist for the terrestrial link (i.e classical TV broadcasting) the requirements are so high that the standard solution are no longer feasible or lead to sub optimal results. Ortogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is a method that allows to transmit high data rates over extremely hostile channels at a comparable low complexity. OFDM has been chosen as the transmision method for the European radio (DAB) and TV (DVB-T) standard.

Basic advantage of OFDM is adata transfer in highly frequency selective channels by using low cost receivers. Disadvantages of OFDM are sensitivity to frequency offset and phase noise. So investigations on OFDM are focused on these problems.

It is defined that noise and fading are the bad factors that influences the communication in power line communication. The basic of the noise and fadings are AWGN, İmpulsive Noise, Rayleigh Fading and Rician Fading.

Noise in PLC is a signicant problem for data transmission. Noise in PLC comes from widely varying noise sources. The background noise is caused by noise sources with low power, ingress of broadcast stations in the medium and shortwave broadcast band, and switching power supplies. Moreover, the PLC channel transfer function is time varying. This is due to the fact that a consumer may plug a new device into the power line at any time, or some appliances may have a time-varying load impedance, which can be the case with switching power supplies or motors. Light dimmers and related products that use triacs create impulsive noise

Power line communication (PLC) suffers performance degradation due mainly to impulsive noise interference generated by electrical appliances. İn this thesis error rate is studied in PLC under AWGN, İmpulsive noise and Rayleigh fading using OFDM. This results are simulated by computer program and the best way is declared for success of OFDM system for power line communication.
