Jon Stewart – Senior Academic Lecturer

Jon is a lead guitarist and songwriter for 90’s Brit-Pop stars Sleeper, enjoying 3 UK Top 5 Albums and 9 UK Top 40 singles. Jon has also written and recorded with artists such as KD Lang and Mel C, and has played sessions for multi-hit record producers Stephen Street (Blur) and Damian Le Gassick (Madonna). Jon writes a long-running column on the music business for Guitarist



magazine, and also works as a music supervisor for film and TV projects. At BIMM Jon is Head of Music Business Studies/Senior Academic Lecturer and is available for one to one tutorials.







Tony Shepherd – Foundation Degree Course Leader

Tony is a professional drummer, percussionist and keyboard player. His work includes performances with Oasis (BBC TV’s ’Later With Jools Holland’), Ronnie Scott’s with Boo Hewerdine, South Bank Centre as part of ’The Song’s the Thing’ - PRS Songwriting week 2002. He achieved worldwide record sales of 200,000 as a songwriter and performing member of The Bible. His experience includes co-writing, recording and promoting three major label albums, review writing for the music press, session work and extensive TV, radio and live appearances in the UK and abroad. He co-wrote the songs ’Glorybound’, to which a chapter of Nick Hornby’s recent book ’31 Songs’ is devoted, and ’Honey Be Good’ which is featured in the film ’Fever Pitch’.





Scott McGill – BA (Hons) Course Coordinator

Proclaimed "The Thinking Man’s Yngwie Malmsteen" by celebrated jazz and fusion author/critic Bill Milkowski, Scott McGill has been playing guitar for over 28 years. His career started at 19 years old as lead guitarist for RCA recording artist Robert Hazard (“Girls Just Want To Have Fun”). His formal training includes a B.M. in Jazz Performance/Composition from Temple University and ten years of study with legendary composer/theorist Dennis Sandole (teacher of John Coltrane and Pat Martino among others). He then went on to win critical acclaim in progressive rock circles and the mainstream press (Guitar World, Keyboard, Guitar Player) as a leader of prog rock/fusion bands The Hand Farm and Finneus Gauge. As a solo artist Scott has led, recorded, and toured in bands featuring legendary bassist Michael Manring, keyboardist Jordan Rudess (Dream Theatre) and iconic bassist Percy Jones (Brand X) as well as Grammy Winning producers Neil Kernon and David Torn. As a teacher Scott was Senior Lecturer of Jazz Guitar at The University of The Arts in Philadelphia U.S.A. and continues to earn critical praise for his playing and music. Scott is excited about his first year at BIMM as Course Leader for the BA and looks forward to making a positive contribution to the institute.





Wendy Law – Head of Events and Guests

Wendy has worked exclusively in the music industry since she was 16 years old. She has worked in various major record companies including BMG/RCA, Universal/MCA, Universal/Island and Warner Music. She has also worked on the management side with bands like Massive Attack and at Live Nation, organising some of the biggest shows in the world, with some of the world’s biggest artists. As BIMM’s Head of Events & External Liaison, she is responsible for arranging BIMM’s internal gigs, from the Concorde 2 to graduation! You will need to keep Wendy informed of your gigs and releases, as she will look at innovative ways to promote you. Wendy will also be booking music industry masterclasses and guests, so you can learn from the best! Keep in touch with Wendy, tell her about your gigs and music - she will include some of the success stories on the BIMM website.





Emily Brewer – Events and Guests Assistant

Emily’s role at BIMM is Events and Guests Assistant. She gives support in assisting Wendy Law (Head of Events and Guests) for both BIMM Brighton and BIMM Bristol. Emily focuses on a variety of aspects such as auditions, gigs, BIMM events, promotion, summer school, website, newsletters, e-newsletters and of course, guests. s always on the hunt for great stories and updates as well as gig information. Emily comes from a strong educational and arts background after graduating from Plymouth University and the London Academy of Performing Arts, where she obtained her Post Graduate Diploma. Emily then went on to work as a professional actress in theatre and film. Acting locations have varied from street theatre, schools, a 1000 seat amphitheatre, to Wandsworth Prison! Needless to say, Emily has a great understanding of performance and auditions.









Neil Kingsbury – Facilities Manager, BIMM East

Neil is a guitarist and BIMM Higher Diploma graduate. He has been performing and recording in bands since the age of 15. In that time he has also been a venue promoter, guitar tech and has considerable experience in music retail so can give advice on buying equipment. He currently plays and writes with Brighton based DIY epic! Hardcore/Post Rock band Fall of Efrafa, who have Four records under their belts, played festivals and toured in Europe and USA. Neil is based at BIMM East as Facilities Manager and is responsible for the day-to-day running of the building.





Adam Brown – Facilities Assistant and IT Support

Adam has been playing guitar for 5 years, been in various bands and is currently playing guitar and singing in Brighton based rock band ‘Duncan Grimface’ as well as working on solo acoustic projects. Adam graduated from ACM in 2005 with a double merit award in Guitar. Prior to joining BIMM in 2008, Adam managed music IT suite in a large Sussex school. He will take care of IT support and facilities at the BIMM West building.

Phil Whiting – Accounts Assistant

Phil is a member of the accounts department working alongside Claire Gardner and Jon Coupe. He deals with all financial aspects at both Bristol and Brighton campuses. Phil has extensive experience in the financial sector and previous work commitments include payment and processing company, RR Donnelley. Phil has a keen interest in sport and recently completed the 10K run for cancer research. His love of music and gigging also holds him in good stead with the team at BIMM!






Bobby Lambkin-Williams – Accounts Assistant

Bobby is a part-qualified accountant and graduated from the University of Brighton in Accounting. During his studies Bobby became a popular DJ for University Radio Falmer and spent several years as an indie DJ in London and Brighton. He enjoys playing guitar, martial arts, sailing, and running half marathons!





Jo Partridge – Higher Education Administrator


Jo is responsible for all Higher Education administration and student support at BIMM. This includes various aspects such as monitoring attendance, coursework submission and support liaison for the University of Sussex. Jo has a degree in drama and an established career in the arts and education sector. She has worked for a number of performing arts companies including Grange Park, Pimlico Opera, The Academy of Live and Recorded Arts, Glyndebourne Festival and Tour. Her passion for modern music and art related fields means she can understand and appreciate the environment at BIMM. Becki Chandler – Recruitment & Admissions Assistant



Becki has been a dancer since the age of 7, and has performed at The Theatre Royal in Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. She studied full time at Theatre School from 5-16yrs old learning dance, drama and singing. Because of this Becki has a strong understanding of the work BIMM musicians have to put into their chosen art. Before joining the BIMM team she worked for a year in Corfu promoting and organising Greek and English bands. She is currently working towards a teaching qualification and continues her dancing as a hobby.








Katy Paddenburg – Examinations and Assessments Officer


Katy is responsible for the smooth running of all aspects of examinations and assessments at BIMM. She is the point of contact for all questions related to exams, coursework and assessments. As a dancer, Katy comes from a strong performing background and has danced on some of London’s most prestigious stages. She is also a choreographer and qualified teacher of dance too. Katy is here to ensure all students achieve their maximum potential. Hothan Isman – Quality and Student Support Assistant As Quality and Student Support Assistant, Hothan’s key responsibility is monitoring all aspects of attendance. She ensures students receive the support needed to be successful whilst studying at BIMM. Hothan graduated in 2001 from the London College of Music and Media with a degree in Digital Arts. She has 5 years experience within in-house and agency recruitment and understands just how important good qualifications are in the professional world. Hothan is a keen singer and has performed in Brighton after recently completing a singing course. She is a huge music fan and a regular gig and festival goer. laire Jarman – Quality and Student Support Assistant C



Claire graduated in 2005 with a degree in Media and Cultural Studies. Since University Claire has worked in education both administratively and in the class room. She has a passion for music and thoroughly enjoys the fantastic music scene in Brighton. Claire joined BIMM as Quality and Student Support Assistant and ensures the students make the most of their time at BIMM.




Fern Penfold – Head Receptionist

Fern is the telephonist and first point of call here at BIMM. She is based at BIMM West reception and assists in the day to day running of reception. Fern has an intense love of music, singing and performing and has experience in performing arts. Before joining BIMM, Fern was a redcoat at Butlins which lead on to a year in Cyprus where she was a lead vocalist and dancer in various hotel shows and currently does function gigs at weekends for MIB. Fern loves nothing more than people with passion for music and performance and where better to work than in amongst those people here at BIMM!








Helen Shrimpton - Telephonist
As Telephonist Helen is the first point of contact for BIMM as she deals with all incoming calls for BIMM Brighton and BIMM Bristol. Her duties also involve dealing with student queries, tutorial bookings and assisting Fern (Receptionist West) where necessary. Helen has a varied performing arts background and has over 10 years experience in jazz and modern dance. She consequently became a member of the Southern Youth Theatre Company and starred in a variety of shows. Helen has a very keen interest in music and art-related fields.




Deborah Royle – BIMM East Receptionist

Debbie’s role at the Brighton Institute of Modern Music is as our Receptionist/Administrator at BIMM East. She handles a variety of tasks including assisting the quality and student support department in attendance monitoring. Debbie joins the BIMM team as a new member of staff this year.

Bruce Dickinson – Education Director

As lead guitarist and writer with Little Angels, Bruce achieved 11 Top 40 hit singles and a No 1 album. He has vast experience as a musician being signed to Polydor Records, Polygram Publishing and Sony/ATV Publishing. Little Angels toured stadiums with international acts including Bon Jovi, Bryan Adams, ZZ Top, Aerosmith, Guns ’n’ Roses and Van Halen. Bruce has also co-writing credits with multi-platinum songwriter Jim Vallance and vast studio recording experience with multi-platinum selling producers including Mike Fraser, Bob Clearmountain and Steve Harris. Bruce has an MA in Education Management from Middlesex University. Publications include monthly columns in ’Guitarist’, ’Total Guitar’, ’The Band Magazine’ and ’Running a band as a Business’ ( PC Publishing).





Sarah Clayman – Commercial Director

Sarah comes from a music business background and began her career working in live music and touring for BCC Concert Promoters and Apollo Leisure. She then worked in New York for 2 years at a management company working for Zhane, D-Influence, and No. 1 dance music act Livin’ Joy. She subsequently returned to the UK to work in the International Department at Sony Music, and become responsible for artist careers outside of the UK. Some of the acts included Leftfield, Roachford, B*witched, Kula Shaker, Grooverider and Dana International. In 1998 Sarah became a partner in Major Minor Management and Music Ltd and worked alongside Kevin Nixon managing careers for Kirsty MacColl, Straw, Helen Boulding, The Jeevas and producers Mark ’Duck’ Blackwell and Steve Harris. Sarah Clayman and Kevin Nixon also set up an independent record label with Crispian Mills and very successfully launched The Jeevas career internationally selling over 150,000 records in 2 years. At BIMM, Sarah is responsible for financing, press and PR, and any marketing and design aspects of the college, as well as developing new record label South Coast Sounds.





Kevin Nixon







Business and Creative Director



Kevin has spent his entire career in the music business spanning over 30 years. As an artist he was signed to EMI and RCA, 8 years as a Record Producer having hits with Alex Harvey, UK Subs and Patrick Hernandez. Significantly in 1987 Kevin closed his independent label Powerstation to become manager of Little Angels (featuring one Bruce Dickinson on guitar!) and has continued to manage artists ever since. These have included Francis Dunnery, Kula Shaker (2 million albums worldwide) and Kirsty MacColl (Gold album in UK and Europe). Kevin also spent 2 years as A&R Director for V2 Records from 1999 to 2001, before becoming a founder member of BIMM. Kevin has worked directly with artists including U2, Robert Plant, Dave Matthews Band, Bryan Adams, Pete Townsend and The Stereophonics, as well as producers such as George Martin, Rick Ruben, Bob Clearmountain and Peter Collins. Kevin now contributes his songwriting experience to Acoustic Magazine.

Jim Williams - Head of Guitar

As an active professional, Jim led an award wining avant garde jazz trio with ‘Golden Globe winning’ film composer Craig Armstrong of Massive Attack and has performed as guitarist extensively in the studio with diverse artists such as This Mortal Coil, Pete Murphy, Maxi Priest and M-People. He has also co-written with many great writers. Recently he has produced, written and remixed with RnB artists such as Terry Walker, LSK and Hinda Hicks. He also writes for many TV series’. This year alone, Jim’s writing and guitar playing has been heard by 40 million people in the UK alone!





Adrian Legg - Guitar Tutor

Adrian Legg has been voted ‘Best Acoustic Fingerstyle’ 4 years in a row by Guitar Player. He has shared the stage with the some of the finest players in the world including Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson, Steve Vai, Richard Thompson and David Lindley. Boston Globe stated of Adrian’s playing "Technical brilliance paired with a troubadour’s tale-weaving skill: these are the things that keep Adrian Legg in lofty company among the world’s best guitarists." Adrian has just joined the team and we are very proud to have him on board at BIMM.





Ace - Guitar tutor

Ace is the former guitarist and songwriter with rock band Skunk Anansie. The band clocked up over four million world wide sales and sold out venues all over the world. They headlined Glastonbury and played Nelson Mandela’s 80th birthday show in South Africa. Ace is now a solo artist and has established himself as an up and coming record producer and songwriter. He’s DJ’d for the Kerrang! Club tour, Monsters of Rock and Download Festival. Ace has also been inducted into the Marshall players’ Roll of Honour and in association with BIMM holds the Guinness World Record for the most effects pedals ever played simultaneously! More recently Ace has established his new music show on Brighton’s Juice 107.2 FM – Mondays to Thursdays 7-10pm. Be sure to tune in!





Kenwyn House - Guitar Tutor





Kenwyn played guitar with British rock band Reef (Sony BMG), with whom he enjoyed massive global success. He has toured the world over supporting some of the biggest names in the business including The Rolling Stones, Soundgarden, Paul Weller and Texas. The band has chalked up an amazing 15 top 40 singles from 5 albums over 8 years. Reef’s second album ‘Glow’ which followed on from the incredible debut success of gold album ‘Replenish’ went straight in the UK charts at #1. Consequently Kerrang! ranked ‘Glow’ in the 100 albums you must hear before you die. We are very pleased to have him on board at BIMM Brighton.





Pat ’The Shred’ Heath - Guitar Tutor

All the notes, all the time! And then some! A regular contributor to Total Guitar and Guitar Buyer Magazines, Pat has also a great deal of experience in music retail so he can advise you not only on your playing, but also how best to spend your money when it’s time to buy a new instrument. Pat has also recorded a solo album which he produced himself and has his own music production company.





Paul Bielatowicz - Guitar Tutor

Paul is a graduate of Leeds College of Music where he gained a BA Hons Degree in Jazz Studies. Paul has been at teacher at BIMM since day 1; writing a large portion of the course notes and specialising in monster technique. Paul regularly writes and records for both Guitarist and Guitar Techniques magazines. In recent years, he has earned a name for himself as a technical guitarist in the Prog Rock genre and is currently a member of both ’The Carl Palmer Band’ (Emerson, Lake and Palmer) and Neal Morse’s band.





Andy Bray - Guitar Tutor

Andy has extensive recording and live experience including tours with Whitesnake, Zakk Wylde and Gun. Andy was the director of the Northern Institute of Guitar, one of the country’s leading schools for contemporary musicians. He is available to discuss career progression, guitar playing, and music theory.





Scott McGill - Guitar Tutor
