In a flight control system, mechanical method is the simplest method to control the movement of control surface. In this mechanical system; by moving the control column, control surface is operated by cables. Today, mechanical systems are used only in aircrafts which are used for education purposes.

In opposition to mechanical control, in automatic flight control system, this processcan easily be implemented by using a closed-loop system, such a closed-loop system is called servomechanism, in which a small power input controls a much larger power output in a strictly proportionate manner. These systems are electro-hydraulic systems. In applications where good dynamic performance is important, it contains the actuator in a servo loop comprising a feedback transducer and electronic controller. The majority of electronic servo-controllers used in these systems are analog based implementations of the well-known PID type.

According to a mechanical system, the response of an AFCS is much more rapid than that of the human pilot, and prevents disturbances reaching sizeable proportions. As a comparison, the human pilot can detect a change of pitch attitude of 1º, 0.3 seconds after it occurs. There is a further delay of a 0.5s while he decides on the amount of control correction to be applied and implements it. On the other hand, in an AFCS a smaller disturbance (0.1º) can be detected more quickly (0.05s) and apply an input to overcome the disturbance within 0.1s.
