The goal of this project is to implement a closed loop control system with a Digital Signal Processor (DSP). The system consists of ‘Shinano Kenshi’ LA052-040E servo motor with encoder, UDN2936W-120 3-phase brushless DC motor driver IC, and TMS320F2812 DSP. The motor power is supplied from Siemens LOGO Power. Phase A and B outputs are connected to the DSP’s quadrature inputs so that the closed loop control can be performed also. The speed of the servo motor is controlled by changing analog signal at the IC input. TMS320F2812 does not have a DAC, for that reason the analog signal can only be generated using PWM signals.
Servo motors broadly used in industry have a significant role in automation and robotic applications. The main diversity of servo motors from other DC motors is having extremely higher positioning precision. This feature makes servo motors intensely useful for positioning critical applications. Digital Signal Processors (DSPs) are also frequently used in real time applications. DSPs are more preferable than General Purpose Processors due to having less cost, less power consumption and smaller size in these kinds of motor control applications. Combining these two important components together makes our design effectively useful in all kinds of motor control applications.
