Instagram User Guide | Cara Head


GLOSSARY OF TERMS

  • Bio: Short description of who you are. Not used on Snapchat, Facebook, or LinkedIn.

  • Business Page: A free feature for companies who wish to be recognized as a business on Instagram. This feature provides a contact button that allows the company to decide how their audience can get in touch with them, as well as get directions to the brick and mortar location.

  • Comment: A reaction or response to a user’s post that shows up beneath the post.

  • Follow: The act of subscribing to another user’s updates or adding another user as a friend or connection on the platform. When you follow a user, everything they post will show up on your feed.

  • Follower: Users who subscribe to your posts on social media platforms. Synonymous with Facebook friends, Snapchat friends, and LinkedIn connections.

  • Handle: Your username on a platform, often preceded by “@”. Handles are not used on Snapchat or LinkedIn.

  • Hashtag (#): A word or phrase (without spaces) preceded by a hash or pound sign to identify a keyword or topic and make it easy to track and locate. Hashtags are most commonly used on Instagram and Twitter; sometimes used on Facebook; not used on Snapchat or LinkedIn.

  • Giveaway/Contest: A way for users to engage with your business through methods such as repost and tag a photo, tag a friend in the comments, or like a post. Giveaways are not common on Snapchat.

  • Like: A virtual thumbs up to show a user you liked their post. Not used on Snapchat.

  • Location: The place where you are posting from, or where a photo was taken. Locations are not tagged on Snapchat (unless using a geofilter). Locations on LinkedIn are mostly used for business profiles or not used at all because the platform doesn’t support GPS locations.

  • Mention (@): The act of tagging another user by placing the @ sign before their username. Mentions are not used on Snapchat.

  • Caption: Short description of a photo or video.

  • Direct Message/DM: One-to-one messaging between users within the app. Users don’t need to follow each other to use this feature.

  • Filter: A way for you to personalize your photos and enhance their look.

  • Newsfeed: The “homepage” of the social media platform you’re looking at, and typically the first page you’re directed to immediately after logging in. Newsfeeds show a stream of information on social media that your friends or people you follow have posted including links to websites, news, pictures, and videos. There is no newsfeed on Snapchat.

  • Post: Content consisting of links, text, photos, or videos that users put on their profile or news feed (depending on the platform) as a way of providing updates in real time.

  • Profile: Personal information on a social media channel. Other users can view your content and personal information to get a better idea of who you are and what you do.

  • Reply: Similar to a mention, the act of responding to another user’s comment or mention by preceding their username with the @ symbol. This directly notifies them that you are responding to one of their comments. Replies are not used on Snapchat.

  • Tag: Links another user to a post or tweet by using the @ sign before their username. Learn how to tag someone on Twitter and Facebook. Users can’t tag on Snapchat.

  • Trend: Popular topic based on how many users have posted a topic with a specific hashtag. Snapchat does not post trends.

  • Username: Your handle on social media accounts such as Snapchat, Instagram, and Twitter. How other users can search for you, mention you, or reply to you.

  • Insta/IG: Slang used when referring to the Instagram app.

  • Post: A picture or video uploaded by an Instagram user.

  • Private Profile: Profile with settings such that you can approve or reject other users’ requests to follow you and see your content.

  • Public Profile: Profile with settings such that any user can find your profile, follow you, and see your content.

  1. Go to instagram.com.

  2. Enter your email address, create a username and password or click Log in with Facebook to sign up with your Facebook account.

  3. If you register with an email, click Sign up.

How to Post or Share


  • Posting Inside the app:

  1. Click on icon that has a plus sign in the middle of it at the middle, bottom of page to upload photo.

  2. Choose photo/video from your camera roll, and upload designated photo/video.

  3. Next, you will see three icons at the bottom of this photo. Click the infinity icon to upload a boomerang, click the collage button to create a collage, and click the select multiple to post multiple photos/videos at a time.

  4. Then, click next. Now you have the options of editing your photo before you post it.

  5. You can choose from their range of filters, and adjust the level of the filter by tapping on the filter widget as well as choose a frame.

  6. When you click edit, you will see options ranging from adjusting-sharpening your photo. When you click these items, you can adjust your photo to meet your desired outcome.

  7. Once you are happy with the appearance of your photo, click next.

  8. Now you can add your caption, tag people, add your location, and connect/post to Facebook, Twitter, and Tumbler.

  9. Finally, click share.

  • Inside the Instagram browser:

  1. You cannot make posts, or share posts.

  • Sharing Inside the Instagram app:

  1. If you would like to share someone else’s photo with someone else, follow these simple steps.

  2. Click on the icon that looks like an arrow at the bottom of the picture you would like to post.

  3. Select who you would like to share the post with.

  4. You can type a personal message to send with it, and all you need to click is send.







How to Respond to Posts and Shares



  • Responding to other people’s posts:

  1. Click the comment box underneath the desired post.

  2. Click post.

  • Responding to a post that was shared with you:

  1. Click the arrow at the top right corner in the newsfeed section of the app.

  2. This is where you can find your direct messages.

  3. Click the person you desire to respond to.

  4. Click write a message.

  5. Click send.

How to Delete a Post or Share



  • Deleting a post

  1. On your profile page, choose the desire post you would like to delete.

  2. Click the three dots in the right corner of your post.

  3. There will be a delete option

  4. Click delete.

  • Deleting a Shared post

  1. Go to your direct messages.

  2. Tap the message you want to delete.

  3. Choose unsend.

How to Set Privacy Settings



  1. Click on the profile icon of the app.

  2. Underneath the word “Following” is a wheel icon.

  3. Choose that icon.

  4. Scroll down, and you will see “Private Account” with a switch that can be turned on and off.

  5. This is how you can control how public your profile is to others.

  6. If there is any other concerns to privacy, it can be found in the same section.

How to Locate Information

  1. First define what information you would like to locate.

  2. If it is who you are following, there is a tab on your profile page that says following choose that tab.

  3. Once you do, you can unfollow people you wish to unfollow.

  4. If you would like to find a specific account you are following, search it in the search bar of the following tab.

  5. The most helpful thing you can do to locate information is to read.

  6. Click the different tabs and get acquainted with what each tab allows you to do.

  7. Don’t know what a button does? Press it.

How to resolve Problems

  1. If you forgot your username/password to your account, choose forgot username/password.

  2. You will receive an email.

  3. Follow the instructions.

  4. Enter new username/password.

  5. Log back into your account.

  6. If there are any other problems you can go to the FAQS section of Instagram.

  7. They will answer your frequently asked questions there.

How to Manage Account

  • Have fun.

  • Don’t post anything inappropriate.

  • Edit your photos.

  • Use Caution.

  • Be Creative.

  • Get to know the app in a hands on way.

  • Find creative people to follow.

  • Do not let Creepy people follow you.

  • Report things that should not be allowed on Instagram.

How to Post a Story

      1. In the newsfeed section of the app, click the camera icon at the top left corner of the page.

      2. Now you can do a range of things dependent upon the story you are adding.

      3. You can choose a picture, boomerang, or video from your camera roll.

      4. You can create a live video, or you can take an active picture, boomerang, or video.

      5. After you choose what you are going to post, you can choose whether or not you would like to add text.

      6. Once you capture/choose and write on the desired story, now you have the option of putting a filter on it.

      7. Once you have finished finalizing your story to be posted, you can save and post it.



How to Save Posts



  • If you would like to be able to look back at a post later, you can save that post. All you have to do is choose the bookmark icon on the bottom of the picture/video you would like to refer back to.

  • If you would like to save your own photo, you can follow the steps above.

  • If you would like to save a story to your profile, go to your profile page. Next, look underneath your profile picture. There is a circle with a plus sign in the middle. Tap this icon. This is how to can save a story to your profile.

How to Access Saved Posts

  • Go to your profile page.

  • Choose the bookmark icon.

  • Here you can access saved posts.

How to Create Saved Collections



  • Go to your profile page.

  • Choose the bookmark icon.

  • You will see posts that you have bookmarked/saved.

  • If you would like these to be sorted by a category of your choosing, click the plus sign at the right on the page.

  • Name your category.

  • Now you have a collection.

View Someone Else’s Story

  • Go to the newsfeed page.

  • At the top of the page is everyone’s stories you are following.

  • You can choose from here whose story you would like to watch by tapping on their profile picture icon.

  • To continue through their story, tap to the right.

  • To go backward, tap to the left of your phone screen.

How to Discover New People



  • Option 1:

    1. Choose the magnifying glass icon to search for people that you already have an interest in.

    2. You can also explore the options they have curated for you.

  • Option 2:

1. Go to your profile page.

2. Choose someone that is currently your favorite to follow.

3. Look at their profile page, and choose the following tab to see who they are following.

4. If you share a common interest, they might be following people you like.



  • Option 3:

    1. Go to your settings. (This can be found in the top right corner of your profile page.)

    2. There is a tab that says, “Follow People”.

    3. Choose this tab.

    4. You can follow all of your contacts and Facebook friends this way.




  • Option 4

    1. Choose heart shaped icon at the bottom of the application.

    2. Choose the Following tab.

    3. See what other people are liking that you are following.

    4. This shows you what the people you are following are interested in that you might be interested in too.

How to Check your Notifications



  1. Choose the heart shaped icon.

  2. Here you can see who has liked your posts, who has followed you, and who has commented on your posts.

  3. Within this option, you can also see what the people you are currently following are liking.

How to Report Inappropriate Content



  1. There are three dots at right top corner of every post.

  2. Tap the three dots.

  3. Choose report.

  4. Now you can choose between spam or inappropriate.

  5. If its spam, that is all you will have to do.

  6. If it’s inappropriate, they will give you further reporting options.





How to See Who is Tagged in Someone Else’s Post



  • Choose the post you would like to further investigate.

  • There is a profile icon on top of the posts that have tagged someone.

  • Tap the picture, one or multiple tags will appear.

  • Click on the profile that you are interested in.

  • You can now see who is tagged.

How to Delete Your Instagram Account



  1. Open Safari and visit Instagram.com.

  2. Enter your username and password and click Log In.

  3. Click on your name in the top right-hand corner of the screen and choose Edit Profile.

  4. Click I’d like to delete my account

  5. Choose an option from the Before You Go, Please Tell Us Why option.

  6. Enter your password in the To Continue, Please Enter Your Password field.

  7. Click Permanently Deactivate My Account
