Course Description
The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the concept of human rights from a theoretical and empirical perspective. As part of this course, fundamental human rights developments will be studied and human rights issues will be examined from a legal and political viewpoint
Requirements
Students are expected to do the readings and come to class prepared. Minimum 70% attendance is compulsory according to university regulations, otherwise you will not be eligible to take the final exam.

Quizzes can be given anytime during lecture hours. They will take 15 minutes each and you will be responsible from any of the topics/readings up to that point.
10% Group Presentation (4 people)

“Explain the human rights situation on torture/ slavery/ genocide/ refugees/ censorship/ political prisoners/ death penalty in Turkey (including historical development and current debates on the issue), the relevant articles of the European human rights convention and (if any) a legal action taken at the EctHR and any proposals for Turkey put forward by yourselves or human rights activists.”

You will present at the end of the corresponding week’s lecture. Your presentation will take approximately 20-30 minutes as a team and you will use slides. The presentation should include:

A good review of the case, relevant conventions and actions taken.

A minimum of two visuals such as photographs, hand-drawn or computer graphics (charts, tables, timelines, etc.) inserted in appropriate places.

Captions (titles) for your visuals

A bibliography of your sources of information, NO WIKIPEDIA! (minimum 5 sources)

At the end of the semester you will submit the paper version of your presentation (a formatted compilation of your texts, with a small introduction, conclusion and bibliography)

This is a task about your academic and personal views informed by the readings and your research. Plagiarism will not be tolerated, if you have any questions on what might count as plagiarism ask me!

Do not forget to address all sub-questions of the presentation question (those highlighted if you are a group of 4, and those not highlighted if you are a group of 3)

Make sure that your presentation is engaging, informative and convincing.
