Antioxidant Activity of Sorbus Fruits
Service tree (Sorbus domestica L.) is a plant which belongs to Rosaceae family and grows as wild in the Western and the Central Black Sea and the Marmara Regions in Turkey. Otherwise, it is grown in gardens for fruits.
In the study, it was investigated whether fruits of Sorbus domestica L. have antioxidant properties. The antioxidant capacity of aqueous extract of Sorbus domestica L. fruits was investigated by various antioxidant tests such as reducing power, CUPRAC, DPPH radical scavenging, hydroxyl radical scavenging, ABTS radical scavenging and DMPD radical scavenging. All results were compared with natural and synthetic antioxidants such as α-tocopherol, butylated hydroxyanisole, butylated hydroxytoluene, Trolox and ascorbic acid. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents of the extract were determined. Moreover, β-caroten content of fruits of service tree was determined. It is found out that antioxidant activity of the extract increases with increasing concentration.
It was determined that extract has shown antioxidant activities in all tests and it could be considered as a source of natural antioxidants.
