Treatment of Fe(II) and Mn(II) in the Drinking Water with Fulvic Asid by Submerged Membrane System

In all natural waters on the earth, high Fe(II) and Mn(II) concentrations are found together with natural organic matters. They cause serious problems in drinking water treatment plants and industrial water uses.

High efficiency removal of Fe(II) and Mn(II) from drinking water is the most important issue for the public health. Removal efficiency of Fe(II) is comparatively higher than removal efficiency of Mn(II) by using, one of the conventional methods, aeration. Beceuse of the removal efficiency of Mn(II) is extremely low, generally oxidation with strong oxidants is applied for the removal of Mn(II). But, it is a well-known fact that many of these oxidants form carcinogen substances such as trihalomethanes (THM) in the presence of natural organic compounds in the water. Because of the facts that mentioned above, the methods used currently in treatment of drinking water must be enhanced. In this context, membrane systems become prominent as promising treatment technologies. Especially in the recent years, significant advancements were achieved by development of submerged membrane systems for treatment of water and wastewater. The most important feature of the submerged membrane systems is integration with the conventional systems. This feature allows the development of new systems working with higher efficiency.

The purpose of this study is removing Fe(II) and Mn(II) to desired limits in the presence of fulvic acid with using an aeration tank and an aerated/submerged membrane systems. For this purpose, the study was carried out in two stages.

In the first stage, concentration changes of NOM, (UV254), Fe(II) ve Mn(II) according to seasons change is going to be investigated in the drinking samples from Ömerli Dam, representing the surface water source, and Danamandıra Village, representing the ground water source, in Istanbul. After caractarization, proper concentrations of Fe(II), Mn(II) and Fulvik Asid were calculated and with them removal of Fe(II) and Mn(II) were investigated in aeration tank.

In the second stage, removal of Fe(II) and Mn(II) were investigated in the presence of natural organic compounds in a laboratory scale set-up which consists of an aerated/ submerged UF combined membrane system. ZW 10 Hollow fiber ultrafiltration membrane was used for studies.

At the end of the study, the removal efficiency of Fe(II), Mn(II), TOC and UV254 were increased with the help of FeOx in the aeration and aerated/submerged membrane systems was found.
