4.1.12.2Valorisation / Exploitation of results


X-LPICM has issued 31 patents during the last 5 years (full list in 7.2). 12 of them are actually co-owned with industrial companies (SAFT, Dow Corning, ArcelorMittal, Total, Horiba JobinYvon, Thales RT). 1 of them is licensed to Horiba JobinYvon, another one currently in negociation for licensing to ASML. Besides, 8 contracts have been signed or are still alive directly between the X-LPICM teams and industrial companies (including ThalèsRT, Samsung, Renault, Horiba JobinYvon, St Gobain, ASML, Wysips). Besides many public funded research contracts involve industrial companies (ThalèsRT, Thalès ED, ST Microelectronics, Horiba JobinYvon, 3SPhotonics, Schneider, Thalès Avionics, Fiat, Novaled, PhotoWatt, Arkema, Hutchinson..)

For all its valorization activities, X-LPICM relies on the IP pool at Ecole Polytechnique and CNRS


4.1.12.3Enseignement superieur / Higher education


X-LPICM scientists are deeply involved in higher education, together with communication activities towards the society and young students.

• PhD level: 16 of us have the HdR and commonly act as Thesis Director

• Master Level: several scientists at X-LPICM are currently teaching at Master level, mainly within the Master "Optics, Matter, Plasma". Actually, X-LPICM members created and currently animate the "OptoElectronics" option within the OMP Master. X-LPICM is also the lead organiser of a new international Masters program "Renewable Energy Science and Technology", proposed in collaboration with the institutes of ParisTech and industrial sponsors (currently under evaluation). One of us also participates in the "NanoDisk" chaire (France-South Korea Master)

• UnderGrad level: several of us are regularly teaching at Undergrad level (Ecole Polytechnique, Supelec)


4.1.12.4Organisation / Organisation


X-LPICM is part of the LPICM, one of the 22 laboratories at the prestigious Ecole Polytechnique, one of the major French engineering schools. It thus benefits of a remarkable reservoir of high level students, together with a long lasting tradition of industrial partnerships.

Each team already demonstrated excellence in basic sciences together with a strong commitment to applied issues. All are very active in fund raising, both from local, national and international agencies together with industrial partners. (Within the last 5 years, more than 80 contracts, including 20 with ANR, 5 EU contracts besides the 8 direct industrial contracts.)



4.1.13Partenaire 13/ Partner 13 : Laboratoire des solides irradiés (LSI) UMR7642

4.1.13.1Recherche et innovation / Research and innovation


X/CEA-LSI gathers 3 teams from the Laboratoire des Solides Irradiés, which is a joint laboratory between CEA, CNRS and the Ecole Polytechnique (UMR 7642). The 3 teams are:

  • XNano (Chemistry &Physics of Nano-objects; Head H-J. Drouhin). Specialized in spintronics, nano-objects photonics and electric transport in semiconductor nanowires and carbon nanotubes.

  • ETSF (Palaiseau Theoretical Spectroscopy group; Head L. Reining) develops theoretical and numerical approaches for the ab initio calculation of many-body effects in electronic spectra, particularly for nanostructured and/or correlated materials. The group is the “Centre for Users and Technology” of the European Theoretical Spectroscopy Facility (ETSF, http://www.etsf.eu ). This structure, with about 200 research experts in the theory and computation of electronic excitations and transport, may constitute an important opening for the Labex.

  • TSM (Theory, Materials Science; Head N. Vast) develops theoretical tools (ab initio, molecular dynamics, Monte Carlo) for studying (i) electronic and thermal conductivity at the nanoscale and (ii) irradiation effects on nano-objects morphology

X/CEA-LSI gathers 14 researchers (including 1 Pr.), 2 research engineers, 10 PhD students and 13 postdoctoral fellows.

Evaluation: LSI was evaluated by AERES in 2008 and quoted A. No individual team evaluation was conducted. It was acknowledged that LSI consists of young and dynamical teams. The work of the researchers applying to the labex was very positively appreciated. From that time, the team structure has evolved. The interdisciplinary activities in nanosciences and nanotechnologies, including polymer chemistry, nano-optics, and spintronics, have led to the creation of the XNano group at the LSI.

At the same time, a strong development in the field of transmission electron microscopy has been initiated, with the creation of an interdisciplinary (physics, chemistry, biology, fluid mechanics, mechanics of solids) electron microscopy centre (CIMEX). Two members of the team are leaders of CIMEX, which was the corner stone for further development of TEM. In particular, the NANOMAX project aimed to study the early stage of material growth with atomic resolution is part of the TEMPOS Equipex project. Team evaluation is planned in a near future.

Research activities: X/CEA-LSI issued 158 publications in reviewed journals between 2006 and 2010, together with 6 patents. Among those publications: 11 PRL. (see 7.2 for details)

17 PhD theses have been obtained within the same period. Among them, 7 new doctors already hold a permanent position. 3 HdR were obtained during that period at X/CEA-LSI.

Scientists from X/CEA-LSI gave ca. 40 invited conferences during the last 5 years. (A partial list is given in 7.2)



X/CEA-LSI teams have numerous collaborations (21 current collaborations within the Campus Paris-Saclay within distinct laboratories, many of them members of the NanoSaclay LabEx, ca. 40 collaborations with research French labs and more than 20 international active collaborations)

Equipments: X/CEA-LSI gathers two theoretical groups and an experimental one. Hence its equipment spreads from calculation tools to chemistry labs.

Synthesis: chemistry lab and surface preparation room.

Spectroscopy: ESR, NMR

Analysis: Size Exclusion Chromatography; DSC,

Microscopy: 1 SEM-FEG

Calculation: cluster OPTERON, 48 processors cluster

Besides, two scientists at X/CEA-LSI are leaders of the NANOMAX project, which aims to study the early stage of material growth with atomic resolution and is part of the TEMPOS Equipex project.
