4.1.10.2Valorisation / Exploitation of results

UMPhys/Spintro has issued 5 patents during the last 5 years (full list in 7.2), all of them jointly owned by CNRS and Thalès. UMPHys/Spintro has no direct contract with industrial partners apart from Thalès itself. Besides, 8 current research projects involve both Thalès and various others industrial companies (including EADS and various SMEs).

For all its valorization activities, UMPHys/Spintro relies on the IP pool at CNRS and Thales

4.1.10.3Enseignement superieur / Higher education

UMPHys/Spintro scientists are deeply involved in higher education, together with communication activities towards the society and young students.

• PhD level: 5 of us have the HdR and commonly act as Thesis Director

• Master Level: 8 of us are currently teaching at Master level in various Universities, in particular the Master NanoSciences at U. Paris XI and the Masters "Materials Sciences and Nano-Objects" at Paris VI and "Quantum devices and Nanosystems" at U. Paris VII.”

• UnderGrad level: 5 of us are regularly teaching at Undergrad level, including Engineering Schools

• Nano events: After the 2007 Physics Nobel Prize awarded to Albert Fert, the CNRS/Thales Physics lab became strongly involved in several actions towards the “grand public”. It ranges from interviews to the press to numerous conferences in high schools. We would highlight here the exhibition on spintronics organized at the Palais de la Découverte in collaboration with the network Cnano-IdF during 3 months in 2008-2009. http://www.palais-decouverte.fr/index.php?id=1779

4.1.10.4Organisation / Organisation

In the Labex Nanos project, UMPhys will involve the team "Spintronics and Functional Oxides" (UMPHys/Spintro). UMPhys/Spintro gathers 13 researchers (9 from CNRS and 4 from Universities), 4 CNRS research engineers, 9 PhD students and 6 postdoctoral fellows. Its main research activities deal with spin-polarized tunneling effects, spin-transfer torque phenomena, spin-injection in semiconductors, magneto-Coulomb effects, multiferroics and ferroelectrics based heterostructures. The UMPHys/Spintro team is very active in fund raising, both from local, national and international agencies. Within the last 5 years, 13 major national contracts (3 ANR Blanc; 10 ANR PNANO) and 8

European contracts (2 RTN-ITN, 4 STREP, 1 ERC Junior, 1 ERC Senior) were obtained.

4.1.11Partenaire 11/ Partner 11 : Laboratoire de Physique de la Matière Condensée (LPMC) UMR7643

4.1.11.1Recherche et innovation / Research and innovation

X-LPMC is part of the "Laboratoire de Physique de la Matière Condensée – LPMC" (physics of condensed matter lab), which belongs to the physics department of the Ecole Polytechnique. Ecole Polytechnique, often refered to as « X », is one of the most prestigious French engineering school. Research department is formed of 22 laboratories corresponding to 1600 people, including 640 researchers mostly from CNRS.

The LPMC lab is associated with CNRS (UMR 7643). About 75 people work in the lab, including 16 researchers (mainly from CNRS), 3 research engineers, 13 PhD students and 3 postdoctoral fellows.

Research activities are multidisciplinary, dealing with several aspects of nanoscience, materials sciences, chemistry of materials and solid state physics. The laboratory is organized in such a way to promote interaction between researchers from different fields of expertise.

Researchers from the X-LPMC partner belong to three of the four teams in the lab: The Solid State Chemistry group (Head T. Gacoin), the "Electrochemistry and Thin Films" group (Head P. Allongue) and the "Electrons, Photons and Surfaces" group (Head J. Peretti).

Evaluation: The PMC lab was evaluated by AERES in 2008 and quoted A+ (no group quotation)
