IEF/Nano has issued more than 20 patents between 2006 and 2010, 18 of them still valid. Some of them are co-owned with companies like Hitachi, STMicroelectronics... In parallel, IEF has developed partnerships with many industrial companies ranging from large groups like STMicroelectronics, Alcatel-Thales, Thales, France Telecom, EDF, EADS, MBDA, Ommic to small and medium entreprises like Yenista, Advanten, Crocus technologies, Tronics, Nanotimes, 3SPhotonics etc. This partnership has been assessed through grants funded by Ministry of industry (Nano2012 program with STMicroelectronics as an example), Ministry of research, Ministry of defence (DGA), ANR driven programs, European FP6 or FP7 programs or direct collaboration with industry (ST Microelectronics, Sagem, Hitachi Japan, …). IEF has been directly involved in the ICT cluster system@tic.
One CNRS senior research associate (B. Dagens) is co-responsible for C’Nano IdF valorization group with an objective to enable and speed-up the transfer of research results from researcher/lab towards young businessmen (often former PhD students). A project of exploitation of results based on a market survey to promote the development of a start-up has been recently awarded by the « prix de l’innovation » of university Paris Sud. This project gathers 2 groups of IEF and ENS Cachan in charge of using light ion irradiation to control physical properties in both nanodiamonds and spintronics devices. A project of joint laboratory between IEF and Fogale-Nanotech, a SME specialized in microsystem metrology, is presently under final discussion.
IEF has also issued software licence agreements on several numerical modeling codes like the Monaco licence software delivered to CEA-Leti or IES. Numerous research projects are performed through CIFRE grants between IEF and industrial partners.
The cleanroom facility of IEF plays an important role for industrial transfer either through training of engineers from external companies (program with Altis), direct collaboration with industry and development of processes and accommodation of SME like Nanoplas, Fogale NanoTech, that have installed and developed equipments inside our clean room, benefiting the technological environment.
IEF has received in 2008 a régional innovation award granted by INPI in recognition of its involvement in industrial transfer.
For all its valorization activities, IEF relies on the IP pool at Université Paris 11.
4.1.2.3Enseignement superieur / Higher education
As a joint research unit of university Paris-Sud, IEF and its staff members have a very strong involvement in Higher Education through teaching and pedagogical projects in nanoscience and nanotechnology.
37 professor and assistant professors from university Paris-Sud and Paris 10 are performing their research at IEF in the nanoscience field and teaching at different levels from Master 1 and 2 to bachelor degrees. Several of them are playing a key role and have been directly in charge of different research or professional specialities, including the head of Master Information Science and Technology, Master Micro nanotechnologies, the head of the new Master 2 Nanosciences, the head of the Research master "Composants et Antennes pour les Telecommunications", Université Paris Sud, the research master "Electronique embarquée et systèmes de communications (Univ. Paris 10)".
IEF has strongly contributed to the creation of the Master "Materials and nanotechnology" in the new University in Hanoi (USTH, University of Sciences and Technology of Hanoi).
IEF and its clean-room facility are thus a very important node for the teaching and training in nanoscience at university Paris-Sud, either for students or for lifelong training of academic and companies' staff. One IEF professor (S. Retailleau) is director of the "Pôle Ile de France sud" of the GIP CNFM (Coordination Nationale de la formation en microélectronique et en nanotechnologies). Several practical training (clean room processing, design and caracterisation of circuits) have been developed in different training modules of the University and in other institutions of Ile de France Sud, thanks to projects funded by the GIP CNFM.
The IEF professors and researchers are also involved in teaching in Engineer schools like Polytech Paris-Sud, ENSTA, Supelec, IOGS, ESIEE.
Numerous schools on nanophotonics, nanoscience, spintronics, have been organized by IEF's researchers.
More than 50 PhD on Nanosciences/Nanotechnology have been defended from 2006 to 2010. 8 "Habilitation de recherche" (HDR) have been obtained by IEF researchers and assistant professors from 2006 to 2010.
IEF is a joint research unit of University Paris Sud and CNRS, by contract managed preferentially by University Paris Sud. Total budget was about 15.1 M€ in 2009, including infrastructure support from Univ. P11. 7.45 M€ is used for salary costs (all salaries). The part of contract money in this budget is 6.8 M€ (ANR, EU, industry, System@TIC Competivity Cluster, local authorities, C’NanoIdF, etc…).
On these numbers, the IEF/Nano part represents : 4.4M€ of salaries of permanent staff (3M€ CNRS, 1.4 M€ Univ.), and 5 M€ of contracts. The large scale nanotechnology facility Centrale de Technologie Universitaire CTU IEF/MINERVE has a annual running cost of 600 k€, and counts 11 permanent staff members, who will all be involved in Nano-Saclay.
IEF has a Direction and Communication service of 3 pemanent staff, who will likely play and important rôle in the animation of the Labex. The Budget is managed by a service of 11 staff members (6 permanent staff) under the direction of the Administrator André Themelin (CNRS, Research Engineer eq. level).
By CNRS-Univ. Paris 11 agreement, contracts are in principle managed by the relevant service of University Paris 11.
