SUMMARY OF PROGRAMS
The Graduate Program in Computational Science (GPCS) at AUB constantly strives to fulfil its strong multidisciplinary mission in serving the AUB community. Computational Science is a rapidly growing multidisciplinary broad area that connects the sciences, engineering, mathematics, and computer science. Nowadays, its role for the future of the scientific discovery process and engineering design is indispensable. The mission of GPCS is focused on preparing its students for the development and implementation of robust problem-solving methodologies to address and solve complex problems in every area of the natural and physical sciences, engineering, medicine, and even in the social sciences and the humanities.
GPCS continues to host graduate students coming from various backgrounds and different universities. This year we have 11 graduate students from AUB, LAU, Haigazian, NDU, LU, and Damascus University. Many of them have already started their projects in the departments of Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Chemistry, and Computer Science. Graduate student Hassan Nasser defended successfully his thesis.
The Departments of Mathematics and Computer Science continue to offer the cross-listed GPCS core courses Math/CMPS 350 & 351. Elective courses were chosen by the students from a compiled group of courses offered in Computer Science, Math, Engineering Management, Mechanical Engineering and Electrical & Computer Engineering.
This year GPCS welcomed distinguished speaker Prof. Peter Coveney (University College London) who spoke about a rapid, accurate, precise and reliable prediction of drug-protein binding affinities using massively parallel algorithms.
