CE report recommends adopting Mitsubishi proposal based on higher coding gain (but cross-check is still needed) and continuing considering view synthesis prediction (VSP) simplifications and further coding efficiency improvement.
m23915 (Mitsubishi): proposed addition of a skip_flag in slice data to indicate whether a synthetic or non-synthetic reference picture will be used for skip and direct modes. This showed an average of 1.0-1.5% coding gain with maximum gains in 2-3% range; higher gains were achieved with larger motion sequences. There was reportedly a negligible increase in complexity.
m23629 (Zhejiang): proposed simplification of view synthesis in VSP. The proposal reports 30% savings in decoding time with less than 1% coding loss. Warping precision is limited to integer precision, and other simplifications are made in the forward warping process.
m23812 (Qualcomm): a CE1 related contribution on reducing complexity of warping process in view synthesis. The warping process was proposed to be simplified (removed block boundary detection, splatting, noise cleaning and warp enhancement) and the warping and hole-filling process were combined. The bit rate increase was in the range of 0.2-0.3%, with a decoding time savings of 15-17%. This contribution also reported benefits for decoding with VSP, i.e., 34% savings for generation of VSP reference.
