Teachers Quality

2.4.1 Provide the following details and elaborate on the strategies adopted by the College in planning and management (recruitment and retention) of its human resources/ qualified and competent teachers to meet the changing requirements of the curriculum.

Being a Government institution, the process of recruitment is through the Meghalaya Public Service Commission following the UGC regulation. For qualification of teachers, kindly refer departmental profile.

2.4.2 How does the institution cope with growing demand/scarcity of qualified senior faculty to teach new programmes/modern areas (emerging areas) of study being introduced (Biotechnology, I.T, Bioinformation etc)? Provide details on the effort made by the institution in this direction and the outcome during the last three years.

The College has not introduced any new courses in the recent years. However whenever new programmes/modern areas (emerging areas) of study is being introduced, the University do call for short term training programmes for teachers as in the case of Physics.

2.4.3. Provide detail on staff development programmes during the last four years. Elaborate on the strategies adopted by the institution in enhancing the teacher quality.

a) Nomination staff to development programmes.

Faculties undergo Refresher and Orientation courses during their services period on a regular basis.

b) Faculty training programmes organized by the institution to empower and enable the use of various tools and technology for improve teaching learning.

The institution has not been able to organize training programme in the recent years.

c) Percentage of faculty.

Participated in external Workshop/Seminars/Conferences recognized by National/International professional bodies.

The faculty is encouraged to participate in such programmes. During the last academic session, the following teachers attended the programmes.

The Government of Meghalaya grants study leave and a No objection to teachers intending to pursue Ph.D. Degree.

2.4.5 Give the number of faculty who received awards/recognition at the state. National. International level for excellence in teaching during the last four years.

Till date, none of the faculty of the institution has received an award.

2.4.6 Has the institution introducing evaluation of teachers by the students and external peers? If yes, how is the evaluation used for improving the quality of the teaching learning process?

The Institution is yet to introduce the system of evaluation of teachers by the students and external peers.


    1. Evaluation Process And Reforms

2.5.1 How does the institution ensure the stake holders of the institution especially students and faculty aware of the evaluation process?

The institution ensures the students and faculty of the evaluation process by notifying the routine for internal test/assessment.

2.5.2 What are the major evaluation reforms of the University that the institution has adopted and what are the reforms initiated by the institution on its own?

The major evaluation reforms of the University are:-



  1. The Annual Examination.

  2. The End Semester Examination.

The institution conducts the internal evaluation system through Tests and Assignments.

2.5.3 How does the institution ensure effective implementation the evaluation reforms of the University and those of the University and House initiated by the institution on its own?

The Institution ensures effective implementation of the evaluation reforms of the University by meticulously following the programmes scheduled for the examination.

As far as implementation of the programme initiated by the institution, it strictly adheres to the routine scheduled for the internal assessment.

2.5.4 Provide details on the formative and summative assessment approaches adopted to measure students achievement like few examples which have positively impacted the system.

The approaches adapted to measure student’s achievement are as follows:

1. Examination system- To assess the overall achievement of a student is through external examination; i.e. primarily examinations are fixed and scheduled by the University. It is the result of these examinations that determined the achievement of students.

2. Internal assessment within the institution provides the student to improve their percentage as 25 marks is being allotted for it.

In fact, it is a positive venture as students learn to express, developed creativity and systematic approach to the various subjects.


      1. Details on the significant improvements made in ensuring rigor and transparency in the internal assessment during the last four years and weightages assigned for the overall development of students (Weightages for behavioral, communication skills etc).

The institution admit students who are average and below. The system of evaluation which is being followed, to a great extend improve their percentage. However independent learning and communicative skills are appreciated and add to weightage, but on behavioral aspects the institution is yet to allot a weightage.

2.5.6 What are the graduate attribute specified by the College/affiliating University. How does the College ensure the attainment of these by the students?

The graduate attributes are specified as:-


  1. First Division - 60%

  2. Second Division - 45%

  3. Third Division – below 45% (minimum 30%)

The percentage is specified by the affiliating University and student’s percentage may fall on any one of the above category, specifying the Division obtained by a student.

2.5.7 What are the Mechanism for redressal of grievances with reference to evaluation both at the College and University level?

It may be stated that one of the mechanism to redress grievances in evaluation is through a workshop. In such an event, the teaching faculties will share their experiences and the problem faced in the institution and evolve a pattern of assessment, for example the North Eastern Hills University adopted the Semester System with 25% of Marks in internal assessment, which gave a boost to students who realize the opportunity that doing well in internal assessment will enhance overall percentage of marks.

It may be mentioned here, that on 15.11.2011, the History Department with Shri O.R.Shallam, Head of Department, and Dr. (Ms) A.L.Lyngdoh, faculty of the Department and member of the Board of Under- Graduate studies organized a workshop for the teaching faculty of History Department of different Colleges in Jaintia Hills on the topic “Semester System”. The Workshop at length discussed the problems of the Semester System in Rural Colleges.

2.6 Students Performance and Learning Outcome

2.6.1 Does the College have clearly stated learning outcomes? If yes give details on how the students and staff are made aware of these?

The institution followed the guidelines of the North Eastern Hill University and the learning outcome depends upon the result declared by it.

2.6.2 Enumerate on how the institution monitors and communicates the progress and performance of students through the duration of the course/programme? Provide an analysis of the students results/achievements (Programme/course wise for last four years) and explain the differences if any and patterns of achievement across the programmes/courses offered.


The Institution monitors the progress and performances of students through the result declared by the University.

2.6.3 How are the teaching learning and assessment strategies of the institution structured to facilitate the achievement of the intended learning outcome?

The Curriculum has been structured by the North Eastern Hills University, the teaching and learning process entirely depends on it

2.6.4 What are the measures/initiatives taken up by the institution to enhance the social and economic relevance (student placement entrepreneurship, innovation and research aptitude developed among students etc) of the courses offered.

The institution organizes Career Counseling to guide the students to face the society after completion of their studies in the College.

2.6.5 How does the institution collect and analyse data on student performance and learning outcomes and use it for planning and overcoming barriers of learning?


Performances of students are determined by the result declared the University. The Institution monitors the progress and performances of students through the result declared and analyse the result to plan overcome the problem identified.
2.6.6 How does the institution monitor and ensure the achievement of learning outcomes?

The Institution ensures the achievement of the learner by completing the curriculum prescribed within the time framed.

2.6.7 Does the institution and individual teacher use assessment/evaluation outcomes as an indicator for evaluating student performance achievement of learning objectives and planning? If yes provide detail on the process and cite a few examples.

The institution as well as the individual teacher follows the system of assessment prescribed by North Eastern Hills University.



CRITERION III: RESEARCH, CONSULTANCY AND EXTENSION

3.1 Promotion of Research

3.1.1 Does the institution have recognized research center/s of the affiliating University or any other agency/organization?

No.

3.1.2 Does the Institution have a research committee to monitor and address the issues of research? If so, what is its composition? Mention a few recommendations made by the committee for implementation and their impact.



The College has constituted a research committee to encourage the teachers to take up research projects. The committee comprise of the Principal and Vice Principal as its Chairman and Vice Chairman and four teachers from the Humanities and Science stream as its members. Since its formation in the academic session 2014-15, the committee has recommended one ongoing minor research project taken up jointly by the Departments of Chemistry and Geology.

3.1.3 What are the measures taken by the institution to facilitate smooth progress and implementation of research schemes/ projects?

The principal investigator is responsible for the project undertaken and full autonomy is given to the principal investigator for utilizing the funds. All possible help is being provided for the success of the project such as timely release of financial assistance, infrastructure, support in terms of technology and information needs if available. The principal investigator is responsible for timely auditing and submission of utilization certificate to the funding agencies through the Principal of the College.
3.1.4 What are the efforts made by the institution in developing scientific temper and research culture and aptitude among students?

No effort is in this regard.

3.1. 5 Give details of the faculty involvement in active research (Guiding student research, leading Research Projects, engaged in individual/collaborative research activity, etc.

At present 12 (twelve) teachers have obtained their Ph. D., 6 (six) teachers are engaged in individual research activity, and the Departments of Chemistry and Geology are engaged in collaborative research activity undertaking a Minor Research Project.

3.1.6 Give details of workshops/ training programmes/ sensitization programmes conducted/organized by the institution with focus on capacity building in terms of research and imbibing research culture among the staff and students.

No such workshops/ training programmes/ sensitization programmes have been conducted/ organized so far.

3.1.7 Provide details of prioritized research areas and the expertise available with the institution.

The staff members are encouraged to pursue research activities and to participate and present papers at seminars / workshops / conferences at national and international levels. They are also given permission to attend refresher and orientation programmes.

3.1.8 Enumerate the efforts of the institution in attracting researchers of eminence to visit the campus and interact with teachers and students?

Researchers of eminence get the chance to visit the campus and interact with teachers and students only during seminars / workshops / conferences conducted/organized by the institution.

On the 18th of October 2012, a Special Lecture on “Education, Modernity and Tribal Societies”, sponsored by the Indian Council of Social Science Research, Northeast Regional Centre, North Eastern Hill University, Shillong. The lecture was delivered by Prof. A.K.Baruah, Head, Department of Political Science, North Eastern Hill University.

The Indian National Science Academy (INSA) sponsored Lecture Series was held on the 8th of March 2013. This was organized jointly by the College and the Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA) Shillong Chapter. The lecture was delivered by a distinguished Biologist, Prof. K. Muralidhar FNA, FNASc, FASc of Delhi University.

On 8th July 2014, a workshop on “Teaching Academic Writing”, was organized by the Literary Committee in collaboration with the Regional English Language Office, American Embassy and English Language Teachers Association of India, Meghalaya Chapter. The main speaker was Diane Millar, Regional English Language Officer, U.S. Embassy, New Delhi.

3.1.9 What percentage of the faculty has utilized Sabbatical Leave for research activities? How has the provision contributed to improve the quality of research and imbibe research culture on the campus?

At present about 12% of the faculty has utilized Sabbatical Leave for research activities. It is observed that this has of late imbibed research culture and more teachers have shown interest in pursuing research activity. 6 (six) teachers are engaged in individual research activity, and the Departments of Chemistry and Geology are engaged in collaborative research activity undertaking a Minor Research Project.

3.1.10 Provide details of the initiatives taken up by the institution in creating awareness/advocating/transfer of relative findings of research of the institution and elsewhere to students and community (lab to land)

The Minor Research Project undertaken jointly by the Departments of Chemistry and Geology entitled, “Assessment of Water Quality of Wells and Springs in Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya”, is an effort by the institution meant to create awareness/advocating/transfer of relative findings of research of the institution and elsewhere to students and local community.

3.2 Resource Mobilization for Research

3.2.1 What percentage of the total budget is earmarked for research? Give details of major heads of expenditure, financial allocation and actual utilization.

No separate budget is earmarked for research. However teachers are encouraged to avail funds from other funding agencies.

3.2.2 Is there a provision in the institution to provide seed money to the faculty for research? If so, specify the amount disbursed and the percentage of the faculty that has availed the facility in the last four years?

No.

3.2.3 What are the financial provisions made available to support student research projects by students?



There is no financial provision to support student research projects by students.

3.2.4 How does the various departments/units/staff of the institute interact in undertaking inter-disciplinary research? Cite examples of successful endeavors and challenges faced in organizing interdisciplinary research.

Inter-disciplinary research in the institution is encouraged and the departments are actively involved. One Minor Research Project is undertaken jointly by the Departments of Chemistry and Geology, funded by the UGC, and another project for establishment of IBThubs, funded by DBT is undertaken jointly by the Departments of Botany and Zoology.

3.2.5 How does the institution ensure optimal use of various equipment and research facilities of the institution by its staff and students?

The college encourages the teachers pursuing research and any possible help such as equipment and research facilities available in the college is being provided to them.

3.2.6 Has the institution received any special grants or finances from the industry or other beneficiary agency for developing research facility? If ‘yes’ give details.

The college does not publicize the expertise available; however, various organizations including the District Administration and individuals do approach and request the college or the teachers personally whenever their services are required.

The institution encourages the staff to utilize their expertise and special permission is granted whenever they are to attend such programmes.
