UNIT 39

LIKENESS & DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SO & SUCH
Their translation are similar, but they are used in a different way.

Study these examples:

  • I didn’t enjoy the book.

The story was so stupid.

  • I didn’t enjoy the book.

It was such a stupid story.

We use so + adjective/adverb:

We use such + noun:

so stupid

so quick

such a story

such people

so nice

so quickly

We use such + adjective + noun:

such a stupid story

such nice people

Note that we say such a ... (not ‘a such ...’)

So and such make the meaning of an adjective (or adverb) stronger:

  • It’s a lovely day, isn’t it? It’s so warm. (=really warm)

  • We enjoyed our holiday. We had such a good time.(=a really good time)

  • He’s difficult to understand because he speaks so quickly.

Compare so and such in these sentences:

  • I like Tom and Ann. They are so nice.

  • I like Tom and Ann. They are such nice people.

(not ‘so nice people’)

You can use so ... that ...:

You can use such ... that ...:

  • The book was so good that I couldn’t put it down.

  • It was such a good book that I couldn’t put it down.

  • I was so tired that I fell asleep in the armchair.

  • It was such lovely weather that we spent the whole day on the beach.

You can leave out that in sentences like this:

  • I was so tired (that) I fell asleep.

  • It was such lovely weather (that) we ...

We also use so and such with the meaning ‘like this’:

  • I was surprised to find out that the house was built 100 years ago. I didn’t realise it was so old. (as old as it is)

  • I didn’t realise it was such an old house.

  • The house was so untidy. I’ve never seen such a mess. (=a mess like this)

  • I expected the weather to be much cooler. I didn’t expect it to be so warm.

Note the expression no such ...:

  • I’m tired because I got up at 6 o’clock. I don’t usually get up so early.

  • You won’t find the word ‘blid’ in an English dictionary because there is no such word. (=this word does not exist)

We say: so long but such a long time:

  • I haven’t seen her for so long I’ve forgotten what she looks like.

  • I haven’t seen her for such a long time. (not ‘a so long time’)

so far but such a long way:

  • I didn’t know it was so far.

  • I didn’t know it was such a long way.

so much, so many, so few but such a lot (of):

  • Why did you buy so much food?

  • Why did you buy such a lot of food?

Additional information

In general, such comes before nouns, or before adjectives followed by nouns. So comes before adjectives alone, or before much, many, few. Compare such and so in these examples:

The meeting was so interesting.

It was such an interesting meeting.

There were so many people.

There were such a lot of people.

It was so shocking.

It was such a shock.

Note:

This girl is so pretty.

This is such a pretty girl.

but in formal (frm) English:

This is so pretty a girl.

(not ‘This is so pretty girl.’)

(not ‘This is so a pretty girl.’)

Remember:

If so is used in place of something that has been said already, to avoid repeating it:

Are you coming by plane? If so, (=if you are coming by plane) I can meet you at the airport.

Such as means ‘for example’:

She can’t eat dairy products, such as milk and cheese.
Notice: The word mess is usually a countable singular noun:

My hair is such a mess! The house is in a mess.

Don’t make a mess in the kitchen!

But: the word disorder with the same meaning is an uncountable noun:

The house was in a state of complete disorder because of the young children. (not ‘a complete disorder’)
