Reflexive pronouns and reflexive verbs

A reflexive pronoun is used when the object and subject of a verb refer to the same person or thing:

He describes himself as a socialist.

It was dark and they found themselves in a strange part of town.

Please drive more carefully or you’ll kill yourself.

We saw ourselves in the mirror.

The city defended itself from attack.

Why do I set myself such impossible goals?

  • Verbs that require a reflexive pronoun

These are uncommon, and usually formal. This dictionary shows these verbs by marking -self in an example sentence:

The headteacher prides himself on knowing (=is pleased that he knows) the names of all 430 of his students.

acquit, comport, conduct (=behave); absent; avail; pride

With ‘behave’ the pronoun can be omitted:

The children are behaving themselves (=being good).

Will you please behave!
