Objective: Create a successful business while communicating solely in Spanish with your classmates.
Task: Decide what business you are going to undertake: Minería (miner), Almacén de Madera (lumberjack), Granjería y Rancho (or some other business you invent!!) You can work by yourself or with a team (let’s limit the number on a team to 3) *Type here if you have other ideas for jobs!
Starting Supplies = Everyone starts with 20 emeralds.
Miner (2 stone pickaxes, 1 stone sword 2 steaks, 32 torches)
Lumberjack = (2 stone axes, 1 stone sword, 2 steaks, 64 planks)
Farmer/Rancher = (64 seeds, 32 bonemeal, 16 wheat, 2 stone hoes, 1 stone sword, 4 of each animal type)
Soldier-Each has a diamond sword, diamond armor, infinite bow and 32 arrows each.
Currency: We will be using emeralds (esmeraldas) as our base currency. Gold and Diamonds will also serve as currency with their values being:
1 gold (oro) = 2 emeralds
1 diamond (diamante) = 3 emeralds
El Almacén de Señor = This is the main store in the village. You can purchase any item in the game for a price (high price). Prices are listed below. Sr. Irvin will also buy your extra supplies (at a very reduced price) if you can’t sell them to your classmates.
Bartering & Trade = Bartering and trade are not only legal in the game, they are highly encouraged. Negotiate with your classmates for better prices.
Game End Goal = Make the most money!! (emeralds). Each player will start out with 20 emeralds. Sr. Irvin will be distributing various achievements during the game that will range from 100-500 achievement points for the leaderboard. You can earn achievements by being helpful, being savvy or ?????
Easter Eggs= In the map there will be various hidden chests that will contain a wide variety of helpful items. If you find them, the stuff is yours!
LAWS: No stealing, griefing (destroying others stuff), cheating (during our creative mode). Sign in under your actual name. Other laws??
GRADING= You will be graded on two aspects of the simulation.

You attempt to run a business by working hard at your trade, working to sell and buy items from your classmates...positive attitude (50% of grade)

You speak/write completely in Spanish during the simulation (any English speaking or writing will result in a grade reduction, each time you speak in English)
*If you have a minecraft question (like how do I make…?), raise your hand and you can ask those to Sr. Irvin in English.

Minecraft survival mode shares some similarities to real life. You have to eat to stay alive, you die if you fall off a big cliff and you won’t win a battle with a zombie with a wood axe. Keeping your Minecraft character healthy in survival mode is important to staying alive.

*Your goal is to survive for 10 Minecraft days and nights (each day/night cycle is 20 minutes) and document your adventures.
Document the things you do in order to survive. Take pictures (7-10) of each day (Día 1, Día 2, etc….) How do you keep your health up? What can you eat? What can't you eat? Do you need to sleep? The entire guide needs to be in SPANISH!!!!
Use of translator programs will result in no grade.
Your “Guía de Sobrevivir” (guide to surviving) needs to include recommendations for keeping up your health in Minecraft.
Your guide should include images of yourself doing various activities (your character of course...hint press F5 to change the camera mode...press F2 to take a screenshot..you can even take selfies!!)

You will get into groups of 5-8 for this project. Your task is to create suburb of our city in MinecraftEdu within the boundaries allotted to each group. Your suburb must contain a minimum of 15 buildings (look at vocabulary list below and the rubric). Each suburb must be developed on a grid system. Your suburb must include streets (run east/west- left/right) and avenues (run north/south- up/down) with names clearly marked in Spanish (for example “La Calle San Juan”). You must include at least 5 streets and 5 avenues. Each building must be clearly labeled in Spanish and must closely resemble it in appearance. Each vehicle must also appear on your map at least once. I am looking for highly creative, well thought out cities (see rubric). *We will be using this map to create a scavenger hunt next week and voting on the best map and scavenger hunt for extra credit.

You are a group of nomads. Your leader “Don Glen” has decided that the land you appear on in Minecraft is a perfect place to start a province. He has decided to call the province “Vegelandia” which speaks to the groups tradition of only eating fruits and vegetables.
MISSION:
Don Glen has given you permission to create towns in Vegelandia. Develop a functioning “town” working with your fellow nomads or by yourself. Your town must have the following requirements:

You must put up signs in Spanish all over your town (label the crops, the homes, the water...everything you can think of!) There is an infinite amount of signs, just ask Don Glen and he will send them to you.

You must pay a daily tax to Don Glen of 2 loaves of bread per person. This will happen everyday at sunrise. If you don’t have enough bread to pay the tax, you will go into debt and will have to pay Don Glen 1 loaf of bread interest for every day it is late. Every block in Minecraft represents a 3 foot square. You will be creating a Wabasha-Kellogg classroom (solo), a part of the building (partner/Guild) or the entire building (class).
Everything that you create must be labeled in Spanish and use vocabulary that deals with items in the classroom and the class subjects. (La clase de español, La clase de biología, etc...)
Take Screenshots as you work by clicking on the F2 Key. You can find your screenshots by going to the "C" drive, finding the MinecraftEdu folder, find the Minecraft Folder and then finally find the Screenshots folder. You will need to create aslide with all of your images, text and links about anything you have learned through this process. I have provided an example of a slide to get you started.
Grading:
You will be graded on your contributions to the Quest. Did you measure out the rooms and build them to scale? Were the rooms detailed? Were you on task? Did you label items correctly in Spanish? Was your building to scale?
How do I start?:
Begin by deciding if you are working by yourself with a partner or a group. Then decide what you are going to design. Do some rough measurements by taking normal steps (around 3 feet) and write down your measurements. I've included maps of the Secondary and Elementary as well as our vocabulary lists.

Task: As a group, design an amazing futuristic school that offers all types of classes and is designed with the students in mind.
1. Get inspired- Find pictures of futuristic schools by doing a google image search. Choose a few design ideas (images) that you will use, save them and email them to yourself. Finally print them out in the IMC in color and create a poster with your design ideas.
2. Create a blue print layout using the poster grid paper. Use colored pencils or markers to identify block colors for your buildings, grassy areas, trees, and any other parts of your school!
3. This amazing school will offer a huge variety of classes! Be sure to include all 21 terms to label your classrooms. Here are some other helpful parts of a school that you should include : (What other things would you like to add to the school?)

Get to know the land because you will be giving tours to vacationers where you will be explaining the many wonders of your chosen environment in Spanish. Your final product will be a tour in Spanish where you will be el/la guia (the guide). Your guests have just arrived from Wabasha, Minnesota so you can give them a tour of your lodge first, then get on your boat and explore the jungle. Record your tour utilizing video and/or pictures. Use the videos and pictures to put together an iMovie that is narrated in Spanish.
Some basic principles of ecotourism to think about when creating your lodge include:

You are a part of a group of nomads that has decided to establish their civilization in an area called “La Tierra Bonita.” Your leader Sr. Irvin has allowed the creation of tribes (groups) that will establish their own homes, grow their own food and protect themselves from the “Hordes”. In return Sr. Irvin demands the following:

Daily Trade Request with Irvin
On a daily basis your group will be submitting a trade request of items from Irvin El Vendedor (Sr. Irvin). Sr. Irvin will be trading the ingredients necessary to make cakes for diamonds, gold, iron and other rare items. Sr. Irvin will give you twice the amount of items per trade versus Enrique. Your group will communicate your trade requests to Irvin El Vendedor by writing them in a book in Minecraft and placing them in the chest in his home office (look for the beacon). All numbers must be spelled out (see help below). Your request will be written in Spanish and must include the following:

Tell me what you need (you need to include the items you are requesting here)
Tell me what you have to trade (you need to tell me what you are willing to trade here)

El Mercado
Every 3rd Minecraft Day will call for a celebration in El Mercado. This is an opportunity for groups to bring items to trade with other groups. You must set up your mercado stand with item frames and signs (Sr. Irvin will give you these, you don’t need to make them) advertising the items you have for sale and what you would like to trade for them. All signs will be written in Spanish. *Everyone will be teleported to the Mercado and be expected to participate. Each group member must trade with another group member.
In a book, document your transactions in Spanish. Submit your book to Sr. Irvin’s chest (right by Enrique’s NPC)

The Hordes
An evil group of rivals is expected to attack our bases by the 2nd day we are playing (Wednesday). You must your homes, farms and animals. You are expected to fight them off so you will need weapons and a plan.
Grading
Your grade for the activity over the four days comes in two parts: Participation, Written Trade Requests and Goals Achievements.
Participation = 500 XP (-100 XP for each time you are off-task)
Written Trade Requests= 1000 XP -4 accurate trade requests in Spanish with Irvin- 4 accurate trade requests with classmates in another group (tribe).
Goals Achievements - 500 XP (-100 XP for each goal not achieved)

El Mundo De Leyendas
Guide
El Mundo de Leyendas is a vast Minecraft world. Your job is to role play the part of a member of a new civilization where everyone speaks Spanish. If you decide to participate in this adventure there are two rules:
1. Follow “La Ley” (the law) -read below
2. Play Minecraft or complete assignment related activities (for the entire 50 minutes of class everyday)
THE LAW- LA LEY
Every communication must take place in the Spanish language, either aloud or written (you must monitor yourselves…this is an opportunity to learn the language in a sink or swim situation)
Vocabulary acquisition occurs from conversation (Guessing is ok if you’re not sure!)
Minecraft must be played in the Spanish language (change the settings to “Español”)
We will be playing in normal survival mode where you don’t keep your inventory.

We are a community - we will be creating community based vocabulary

Each person is responsible for “Reflecting” journaling/writing/vlogging on a weekly basis in Spanish. Submit your reflections to Schoology or post them on your YouTube channel and share the link.
Reach a Professional Global Audience- Post pictures, videos, vlogs of your accomplishments to a global audience via Twitter, Instagram and YouTube use the hashtags #MinecraftEd #WKSpanish and tag Sr. Irvin @irvspanish

Global Tasks:
Every week you will receive a global task, this is basically something that you have to do in Minecraft as a group or individual. All global tasks will be written in Spanish you will find them in Schoology and you will find them written in this Google Document. Global tasks are not optional, you must try to complete them to the best of your ability. Most of the time these tasks will take team-work….remember you are communicating solely in Spanish.
NPC (non-playable characters):
Every week there will be a new NPC that will need something from you. This will be in the form of trading items or quests. You can choose to do the competition/adventure or not.
Week 1 (16 de marzo-24 de marzo) Global Tasks
La Comunidad
1. Necesitamos construir la comunidad de “Abedul” (means birch wood).
Cada persona necesita una casa construida con abedul. Cada casa necesita una puerta de madera y ventanas de vidrio. Cada persona necesita una granja cerca de su casa.
SUPER IMPORTANTE: La ley del Mundo de Leyendas dice que si cortas un árbol necesitas sembrar un árbol (reflect upon this law at the end of the week)
2. La comunidad necesita un sistema de calles. El sistema de calles necesita ser organizado. Todos en la comunidad necesitan ayudar construir las calles.
3. Sr. Irvin necesita un edificio en el centro de la comunidad hecho de piedra. El edificio necesita ser un mínimo de dos pisos, necesita una puerta de hierro y ventana de vidrio. Las leyes de la comunidad necesitan estar escritas en un bloque de información (information block) adentro del edificio. Las leyes necesitan ser escritas en español. Todas las leyes necesitan ser votadas por toda la comunidad (la mayoría gana) ANTES de estar escritas en los bloques. (this is a great topic for reflection at the end of the week)

MinecraftEdu Project Scenario (Will be working on this last week of unit approx 3-5 days)
Students will spawn into a world where they are hired home contractors and appraisers. In the outskirts of the city of Casas Grandes (yes there are lots of big houses!) there are currently a lot of empty lots. There are hundred of people waiting on homes to be built on these lots and some are waiting on their home to be appraised for home insurance before being able to move in. You will need to be able to read the signs in front of the lots. You will also need to be able to understand the phone messages that some of your clients have left you describing the home they want built. Finally you will need to be able to appraise homes that have already been constructed by describing them accurately in Spanish.
Collaborate with your group to:
1. Discuss what materials you will need to fit the specifications of the home (colors, windows, doors, in front and behind the home, number of bedrooms, bathrooms, etc…)
2. Visit the hardware store to see what materials are available for free and what costs money
(*For teachers- Hardware store will have NPC as well as command blocks that will give students stone tools, cobblestone, dyes, crafting table and furnace for free- There will be upgraded tools and materials available for a cost)
3. Gather resources needed for construction that are not available at the hardware store
4. FINAL PRODUCTS:
You will be rewarded after successfully completing each home with gold coins. Submit a “home portfolio” (google Slides PDF) to each customer. Your goal is to be the first group to successfully construct all of the homes and make your customers happy. After completing all of the homes you and your group members can construct your own dream homes in your area.
Receive payment from the customers to upgrade your building tools, building blocks, materials and other supplies at the hardware store. Houses must be constructed in order!
House 1 constructed and satisfied customer- 10 pesos to each person in your group
House 2 constructed and satisfied customer- 20 pesos to each person in your group
House 3 constructed and satisfied customer- 30 pesos to each person in your group
House 4 constructed and satisfied customer- 40 pesos to each person in your group
House 5 constructed and satisfied customer- 50 pesos to each person in your group
House 6 constructed and satisfied customer - 100 pesos to each person in your group!
6. Write the appraisal for home near the spawn points (There is a sign that says appraisal needed) by describing the home in Spanish in complete sentences. Use the following guide:
Size (grande, mediana, pequeña) (muy)
Color(s) of home (magenta, roja, azul, amarilla, negra, blanca, gris, verde, morada, anaranjada, etc…)
# of floors (pisos)
# of rooms (dormitorios/cuartos)
# of bathrooms (baños)
Kitchen (cocina)
Living room (sala)
Could have basement or attic (sótano, ático)
Garage - garaje
In front/behind the home (trees, pool, lawn) enfrente/detrás - árboles, piscina, césped
Accurate appraisal results in 50 pesos for each person in your group.
DANGER!!
Angry Neighbors:
This type of construction project has made enemies, in fact you have neighbors who want this project to fail. They will attack you as you try to gather resources. It is recommended that you be careful and always travel in pairs when gathering supplies and resources.
La Mina- There is a mine close to the construction project that you can use to gather resources. Just be careful as there are angry miners who are not happy that you are there.
El Bosque- There is a large forest near the construction project where you can gather wood. Once again be very careful because there are lumberjacks with wolves that are not happy about you chopping their trees.

Each customer will require a final portfolio with a picture and label of each item they want created in their homes.
Tasks
Collaborate with your group to:

Discuss what materials you will need to fit the specifications of the home (what colors do you need, windows, doors, what needs to be in front and behind the home, what's the number of floors, bedrooms, bathrooms, etc…). How do we design a kitchen, living room or bathroom in Minecraft? *It's ok to look for ideas on the internet!!
2. Visit the Mercado (market) to see what materials are available for free (simply press the button of the desired item). You can also buy items from the store.
3. Gather resources needed for construction that are not available at the hardware store (wood, sand (for windows, etc...)
4. FINAL PRODUCTS:
