SMART GAMES AND CONTEMPORARY BUSINESS EDUCATION

ABSTRACT

Accordingly to Dale’s Cone of Learning Experience, the efficiency of teaching, in general, is directly connected to the method that is implemented in this process. If we focus more on “hands on” experience by using analysing, designing, creating, evaluating etc. approach, we will mange to deliver higher standards of education. Today, this “learning by doing” has become known as “experiential learning” or “action learning” [Anderson H.M.]. There is no difference, when we try to develop the best approach to business education. It seems to be that the best option for management programmes is to adapt the curriculum that consists of  “Role-play a situation” or “Model or Simulate a Real Experience”. In fact, in both ways, we present the management process as a game that allows to build different business models and different managers roles. In other words, we can test by simulation different business ideas, solutions, processes, on the other, we can evaluate presented by players different competences. The article presents the idea of “Serious / Smart Games” that were discovered for educational purposes by Clark Abt in 1970 and defines “good practices” for games that can be implemented in the contemporary business education system.

ORAL COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES BY EFL STUDENTS STUDYING AT THE ELT DEPARTMENT: ÇANAKKALE CASE

ABSTRACT

With the increase in the globalization in today’s world, the interaction has gained such incredible attention by various fields of social, economical, political and several other life contexts. Therefore, it is of great importance to interact with various people with different backgrounds, when human relations are considered. These interactions are meaningless unless they orient on a common language to share. Such endeavours become meaningful if some certain strategies are embraced. Of the interaction strategies, oral communication strategies are one of the most effective strategies. Oral communication strategies and hence have been discussed by many scholar (Bialystok, 1990; Bialystok and Fröhlich, 1980; Nakatani, 2005, 2006, 2010; Yaman and Özcan, 2013, 2015). The main foci of those studies are to detect the strategies deployed by the learners, pre-service and in-service teachers and so on. They generally focused on the gender and proficiency levels of the participants and in order to show interactions between such variables inferential statistics have been run. At such research context, administers the Strategy Inventory of Oral Communication (SIOC) scale which is developed by Yaman and Özcan (2015) to reveal strategies used by Turkish EFL learners studying at university level. Considering the foci of the studies mentioned, this study not only focuses on variables as gender and grade of participants in the scale administered but also the possible statistical interaction between the variable of being abroad and its duration. For this purpose, inferential statistics will be run. To see the interaction among variables factor analysis will be run (2x4x2). Related bar charts, figures and tables will be presented. In conclusion, the strategies mostly used will be given and discussed in accordance with the independent variables.

ZUSAMMENFASSUNG

Musik ist ein wichtiger kultureller Bestandteil jeder Gesellschaft und es gibt Musik seit Bestehen der Menschheit. Musik unterhält, Musik entspannt und Musik erzählt vom Leben der Menschen. Schon immer ist die Musik ein wichtiges Instrument für die Vermittlung gesellschaftlicher Fakten und für den Ausdruck menschlicher Werte und Emotionen gewesen. Die Verwendung der Lieder ist im DaF-Unterricht von vielseitiger Bedeutung. Durch sie könnten die Lernenden, sowohl für die Vermittlung bzw. Erwerb von Fremdsprachen positiv beeinflusst, als auch für die Wahrnehmung der menschlichen Themen wie die Gleichheit aller Menschen und ihrer Rechte sensibilisiert werden. Ein angstfreieres, lustvolleres und spontaneres Herangehen an die Fremdsprache durch Lieder fördert ein effektives Lernen und dazu die kreative Tätigkeit der Lernenden. Auch in Bezug auf vier Kompetenzen können Lieder den Fremdsprachenunterricht, einschließlich der Aussprache, auf vielfältige Weise unterstützen. Im Beitrag wird versucht, deutsche Rock- und Poplieder, die die  Gleichheit aller Menschen und ihrer menschlichen Rechte zum Gegenstand haben, in Bezug auf die „Interkulturelle Erziehung“ im DaF-Unterricht zu analysieren und zu erörtern. Bei der Auswahl der Lieder lag der Fokus auf dem inneren Zusammenhang (Thema-Inhalt, Aufbau, und Gestaltung). Berücksichtigt wurde dabei insbesondere die Textart, der Autor, die inhaltlichen Aussagen des Textes und die Aussageabsicht des Autors. Im Zentrum des Interesses stand auch die informierende Funktion zum Thema “Mensch” und die didaktisch-vermittelte Funktion für den Daf-Lerner. Schliesslich sollten sie durch diese Art von Texten zum Lesen, zum Hören, zum Sprechen sowie zum Schreiben animiert werden und dabei auch die reflexions- und kommunikationsstimmulierende Funktion fördern. Daneben spielte die Unterhaltungsfunktion eine Rolle, denn die DaF-Lerner sollten sich inhaltlich für das Thema des Liedes interessieren können. In der Untersuchung wurde versucht, aus den Inhalten der Lieder systematische Daten zu gewinnen und daraus wiederum Schlüsse zu ziehen. In diesem Rahmen wurden die Liedtexte mit dem "hermeneutischen Ansatz" unter der Verwendung der "textimmanentorientierten literaturkritischen Methode" analysiert.
