AB - ABSTRACT: The origins of the hydrocarbon gases recovered from the Chuchupa, Ballena, and Riohacha fields, located in the Guajira Basin, Northeast Colombia, are examined. These gases are composed of methane with trace amounts of wet gas components (C (sub 2+) <0.5%). The methane is isotopically light (delta (super 13) C (sub 1) <-50 per mil), as are the other hydrocarbon components. The Ballena and Riohacha fields are considered to have a biogenic origin and the Chuchupa gas is thought to have a mixed biogenic-thermogenic origin. The presence of a thermogenic contribution at Chuchupa need not, however, indicate that the sedimentary sequence was exposed to elevated temperatures. The generative kitchen located to the northwest of the three gas fields would preferentially feed into the Chuchupa Field. The gases recovered at three onshore seep localities appear to include a thermogenic component. As a result of fractionation it is unclear whether they represent "pure" thermogenic gases or a mixed thermogenic-biogenic origin similar to Chuchupa. An examination of oil microseepage observed in soil samples recovered from the onshore Guajira region point to another hydrocarbon system apparently not related to the three gas fields. Some of these microseeps include "fresh" (nonbiodegraded) oils. These microseeps did not correlate with either of the Tertiary oil families from the Sinu Uraba Basin located to the southwest of the study area or with Cretaceous oils from that basin. A better correlation was observed with the La Luna Formation, but significant differences remain implying that the source for the microseeps was less calcareous and deposited in a less restricted environment than associated with "classical" La Luna facies. This could indicate either a facies change or that a different source unit is present within the region.

AB - ABSTRACT: Twenty three oils from the Llanos Basin (Colombia), most of them located in the central area, were analyzed for organic geochemical parameters to improve the understanding of the oil phases involved in the accumulated oils of the area, to quantify the mixing of the main generation pulses, and to make inferences concerning the migration processes involved. The analytical program included determination of the S, Ni and V content of the whole oils, gas chromatographic analysis of the saturate fraction, and d (super 13) C analysis of the saturate and aromatic fractions. Saturate, aromatic and NSO fractions were analyzed by GC-MS for sterane and triterpane distributions, phenanthrene and dibenzothiophene distributions and alkylated carbazoles respectively. In general, the results obtained for the oils show major variations of several parameters associated with source rock paleoenvironment, type of organic matter, oil preservation and source rock lithology. The pristane/phytane ratios range from a 1.04 to 5.11. The oleanane/hopane ratios range from ca. 0.1 to greater than 0.5. The demethylated hopanes range from low concentration to very high concentration. The ratios Ts/Tm, C (sub 35) /C (sub 34) hopanes, C (sub 30) hopane/C (sub 27) sterane, C (sub 24) tetracyclic terpane/C (sub 26) tricyclic terpane also vary from extremely low values to relatively high values. The geochemical characteristics of the oils from the central area of the Llanos Basin indicate that there have been three different phases of oil generation from different source rocks. The oil families identified in previous work represent mixed pulses of oils in which the extent of mixing depends on the location of the wells within the basin. The first phase of oil was originated from Upper Cretaceous carbonate shale facies. This oil, is widely distributed in the central platform area and exhibits a relatively low oleanane/hopane ratio (less than 0.1), low C (sub 24) tetracyclic/C (sub 26) tricyclic terpane ratio, pristane/phytane ratios of less than 2, and high C (sub 23) tricyclic/hopane. The second oil phase identified in the central foothills, is distinguished by high oleanane/hopane ratios (from 0.58 to 0.65) and was probably derived from a shale interval of the Mirador Formation (Tertiary). The third phase, with a high hopane/sterane ratio (higher than 10), relatively high oleanane/hopane ratios (from 0.22 to 0.5), relatively high C (sub 24) tetracyclic/C (sub 26) tricyclic ratios and high diasteranes/steranes, was probably derived from a different Tertiary source rock or from a more siliciclastic Upper Cretaceous source rock. Most of this pulse is present in reservoirs in the foothills region of the basin with only some reaching the central platform. The contribution of the main Tertiary pulse (the oleanane rich oil), to oils present in the foothills wells is estimated to be as high as 52%. The carbazoles, particularly the shielded and partial shielded isomers were, as expected, relatively enriched in those oils thought to have migrated further from the postulated source rocks.

AB - ABSTRACT: Lahar floods are among the main hazards originated by ice and snow melting during eruptions of glacier-clad volcanoes. Hazard evaluation can be fast and safe by using remote methods such as digital photogrammetry, using software for image processing of scanned aerial photographs. Digital photogrammetry also allows monitoring of the evolution of geological processes. Before the onset of the current eruptive activity, Popocatepetl glaciers were studied by direct methods. After December 1994, it became necessary, for safety reasons, to find a remote method to continue with the study of glacier changes. In this paper, a hazard evaluation methodology is discussed and applied to measurement of glacier areas at Popocatepetl on December 2000 with the aim to determine equivalent water volume and to estimate maximum and minimum laharic volumes for different ice-melting scenarios. Our results show that even a 100% ice melting would not produce a laharic event of the size of the catastrophic lahars at Nevado del Ruiz or San Nicolas.

AB - ABSTRACT: This paper first addresses some events about casual relations of aborigines with oil clue findings in the Colombian territories during the Spanish conquest and colony. Then it summarizes the official history of the petroleum activity in Colombia-started in the early years of the XXth Century--and points some of the social and environmental impacts of exploration and exploitation on the peoples and cultures inhabiting the major oil areas of the country, such as extinction, loss of territories, margination and poverty. The previous outline serves as an introduction to analyze the conflict provoked by the exploration of the Samore Block between the US multinational company Occidental de Colombia, OXY, associated with the government owned Empresa Colombiana de Petroleos, ECOPETROL, and the indigenous U'wa community, that considers oil extraction to be against its ancient beliefs. The Samore Block is the most promising oil prospect and Colombia relies on it to maintain its hydrocarbon self-sufficiency. To OXY it could represent the discovery of 1400 Million barrels of crude and to the region more than 500 million dollars in royalties. It is therefore clear the collision between the oil company's and the local government's economic development ideas and what the indigenous culture understands as development. The difficulty to conciliate the different outlooks and cosmovisions of this conflict's protagonists, necessarily leads us to think about the role of industries and ethnic minorities in the frame of the 1991 Colombian Political Constitution, the actual meaning of terms like: sovereignty, resources ownership, Nation, State, multiethnic and multicultural.

AB - ABSTRACT: Sao Bento gold deposit (Minas Gerais, Brasil) occurs in the middle portion of the Quadrilatero Ferrifero (latu sensu), hosted by the Sao Bento Iron Formation. This is a BIF (Banded Iron Formation) composed of fine layers of oxide, carbonate, silicate, and sulfide facies. Sulfides usually form veins of variable sizes that crosscut the BIF layering at very small angles. The most important minerals in the deposit are: arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, electrum, magnetite, ilmenite, siderite, ankerite, calcite, quartz, chlorite, stilpnomelane, and muscovite. Arsenopyrite (Fe (sub 1.01) As (sub 0.99) S (sub 1.00) -Fe (sub 1.00) As (sub 0.82) S (sub 1.18) ), occurs mainly as rhombus and is zoned with a clear petrographically defined core. This core presents As/S diminishing from center towards its limits, typical of As-rich environments. The rim shows rhythmic changes in As/S, which generally increases and tends to stoichiometry from the core limit to the most external crystal rim. This is typical of environments with high sulfur activity. This zonation indicates two arsenopyrite generations.
