Standstill Pperiod (1576-1699)
After the death of Suleiman I, the Ottoman Empire entered a period of stagnation. During this
period, the Ottomans could not expand their lands any more and only managed to protect
their lands.
The most important reason for the Ottoman Empire to enter a period of stagnation is that
social and cultural breakthroughs and technological developments such as the Renaissance
and Reform in Europe, unfortunately, did not find a response in the Ottoman Empire and the
empire started to fall behind in the artistic, cultural and military sense.
The biggest reason why this period is called a stagnation period is the sultans who ruled the
Ottoman Empire during this period. The sultans in this period were generally composed of
people who were addicted to entertainment and alcohol. Sultans of this character always kept
state affairs in the second place and enjoyed the power they had.
The technological superiority of European countries caused the Ottomans to sacrifice more
and more people in order to protect their lands.
