Period of Decline (1699-1792)
After the agreement signed between the Ottoman Empire and the Holy Roman German
Empire in 1699 (Treaty of Karlowitz), the Ottoman Empire lost territory for the first time and
the period of decline began.
The Ottoman Empire fell behind from the Geographical Discoveries, Revolutions and
technological developments in Europe and as a result, the Ottoman Empire began to decline
economically, militarily, politically and socially. This decline brought defeats in the wars and
the Ottoman Empire began to collapse day by day.
During the period of decline, the Ottoman Empire was delayed in following the developments
in the world and one of the most important reasons for this was that reactionary and bigoted
groups in the religion of Islam had a say in the Empire administration.
I will give you an
example to better understand this situation. Istanbul II. The observatory, built by Mehmed,
was completely destroyed by cannon fire in 1580. The reason for the collapse of this
observatory is the thought that the skirts of the angels in the sky were followed in a perverse
way.
