Duties

No. PS34 - 24 Aug 2017
The Workforce Information Group collects, analyses, and reports on APS employment information and trends. This information is used by the APSC and broader APS to:

  • develop strategic human resource policies and action plans

  • benchmark progress against workplace strategies

  • support workforce management activities.

The Workforce Planning and Metrics team assists the Commissioner to carry out his statutory functions, in particular, evaluating and reviewing Australian Public Service (APS) workforce management policies, and reporting on the state of the APS.

The Workforce Planning and Metrics team:

  • Maintains the APS Employment Database (APSED) and its public internet interface (APSEDii)

  • produces the bi-annual APS Statistical Bulletin

  • co-ordinates and reports on the annual APS Remuneration survey

  • responds to a range of ad-hoc data requests from within the APSC, the public, other APS agencies and government at all levels

  • provides advice to agencies about workforce planning.

Some of the regular duties our team members may undertake include:

  • playing a key role in maintaining APSC datasets, including the APS Employment Database (APSED) and its interactive interface, APSEDii

  • providing support to internal and external users of APS data via web portals

  • responding to a range of ad-hoc data requests

  • providing timely input into Parliamentary and Ministerial briefings

  • assisting with the evaluation of various APS wide strategies.

The successful applicant will work independently within a busy and outcome-focused team. The person will have the ability to work with data in a variety of formats. Intermediate to advanced skills in Excel—along with experience using SAS (or other statistical software)—would be particuarly advantageous.

Ideally the successful candidate will have a mix of data analysis and research skills and experience. In addition they will be someone who can communicate effectively with a network of contacts across the APS, including the ability to provide guidance and training on the use of the online data portal. Clear communicate is also essential in this role—particularly the ability to explain technical concepts to general audiences, and to guide non-experts in the effective use of data.
