Investigation of Viscoelastic Properties of Polyolefin Blends
Polyethylene is the most widely used commercial thermoplastics because of its advantages such as superior physical and mechanical properties, easy processability, availability in many applications, to be used at low temperatures due to molecular structural properties and low cost for compounding solutions. Polyethylene types are available with different characteristics. In recent years, it has been widespread blending polymers having different physical and structural properties to get multicomponent mixtures for intended use.
In this thesis study, films containing blend of linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) and high density polyethylene (HDPE) in different ratios were prepared using a corotating twin-screw-extruder by the method of melt blending and melt drawing, and solid state viscoelastic properties were investigated. Creep behaviors of these films were tested at three different temperatures (23, 35, 45°C) at constant stress (4 MPa), and viscoelastic parameters of samples were modelled using four-element Burgers model. The effects of LLDPE content in blends, co-mononer type of LLDPE and test temparatures on viscoelastic properties of films have been investigated.
In addition, melting and crystallization behaviors, and micro-structure of samples were investigated by differantial scanning calorimetry (DSC) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively.
