Determınatıon of Aesthetıc Potentıal In Urban Forests

(Case of Study At Emırgan Grove In Istanbul)
This study aims to determine aesthetic potential of urban forests; within evaluation of visual quality by using a special method according to users’ opinions as well as experts’ evaluations. Thence, it aims to contribute to the further designs and plannings. Comprehensiveness of this study is to evaluate applicability of Emirgan Grove method’s to Bosphorous’ several urban forests which have similar ecological peculiarities.
Main material of this thesis is Emirgan Grove. Study area had been divided into 18 plot areas, and evaluated within 60 different photos individually from each plot area visually. This study achieved in 3 phases. First phase is inventory analysis, where natural and cultural landscape properties of the study area evaluated. Second phase is to determine aesthetic potential by survey method. There were 3 types of surveys; assessment of the adjective pairs, assessment of visual landscape preferences and visual quality parameters according to user groups and experts. Last phase of this study is visual quality assessment where all the survey results examined.
The survey of assessment of visual landscape preferences is prepared with Semantic Differential Technique. 60 photos have been evaluated based on 10 opposite adjective pair on Likert Scale (1-7) by the user groups. Weighted average method, Chi- square, Correlation, Variance, Frequency analysis have been applied on the survey data. The survey results of user groups have been combined with the results of expert survey and aesthetic potential of the plot areas have determinated. Finally sample fields have been evaluated depending on visual quality parameters (coherence, mystery, naturalness, legibility, complexity).
Data which gathered in this study is found to be statistically significant and the results are consistent with previous studies regarding landscape preferences and has been given to be taken advantage recommendations intended to urban forest planning, design and management studies.
