1981-2010 is the climatological reference period
Basis: Present 30 year average or what is available and be able to easily grad “current” data and display it.
Tasks:
-
Gather readily available data sets:
-
Display long term average and (daily) data sets – likely can do simple subtraction in McV, and display, but cannot output to file
-
Goal for creating summaries to use locally is for the user to be independent – not have to rely on us to produce simple
Primary:
Precipitation:
Local precipitation (ask Grahame about) - Need to confirm that we can read in and overlay point data in McV
Precipitation from reanalysis (ask Grahame about) – If this is in some grid-type format, we should be able to read it in, but will need to confirm that we can read it in to McV.
Satellite derived data sets:
NASA? IMERG (TRMM 1998-2017 {since TRMM is not operational, using GPM to make TRMM-like product until 2017; new IMERGE algorithm will be run on TRMM data to create a coherent “backwards” product at some point}
NOAA Hydroestimator (for some past files, data may be off a point – check if it has been fixed)

McIDAS AREA files (15 minute - for last month?) ftp://ftp.star.nesdis.noaa.gov/pub/smcd/emb/f_f/hydroest/centralamerica/AREA/
Delete AREA from the link above and check out mcidas for longer term and 24 hour for daily values. (potentially 20080505 – 20130325) There may be a longer data set in the GRAD format for the globe (2006002 – 2013084 daily for 00 – 00 UTC, 2006002-current daily for 12-12 UTC)

Questions
In McV, can we average daily data to get a monthly average? Can we average monthly data over years to get the longer term average?
If McV does not read in GrADS format, can it be converted to GRIB with GDAL? (Is that shift in the data point still there?)
SST and land temperatures:
NOAA NCEI (National Centers for Environmental Information – formally NCDC ) (Daily 1981-present – they use a 30 year value to get the anomaly. Is that available to show?)

Agenda for May workshop
Number of participants: 8 minimum, 11 maximum
Who is the participant? Agriculture/hydrologist vs. forecaster 0- Answer from Grahame – Meteorologist in forecast office. Perhaps put this as a note in the agenda.
Types of events: Drought (continuous longer term monitoring) vs. extreme rainfall or other hazardous event.
Want to cover information about the products: strengths and limitations, how to access data, display it, query it, potentially manipulate it.
Dust/ash - half day
NDVI and VH – half day
SST and land temperature half day
Precipitation – whole day
Ground truth - plotting text or other point data
